Now that you've downloaded WinMX, your next step is to install it. We've produced this simple step-by-step guide to assist you. Step
1 If you chose Save when you were prompted by the File Download window, locate the icon for the WinMX setup file. Normally, it can be found right on your desktop. If you saved the file to a different folder, open that folder and click the WinMX setup file icon. If you chose Open when you were prompted, the setup program should have already started running once the download was complete, and you can proceed to Step 2. Step
2 The first screen you'll see is a warning to make sure you're not already running an earlier version of WinMX. If you're upgrading your copy of WinMX, you'll need to make sure it's not currently running. If this is the first time you've installed WinMX on your computer, you can proceed by clicking the Next button.
Step 3 The next screen presents the end-user license agreement (EULA) for WinMX. We recommend reading it carefully. Don't worry, it won't take long. Once you're finished, click the Yes, I accept this agreement button.
Step 4 The next screen allows you to specify the installation folder for WinMX. In most cases, you can accept the default. If you'd like to change the folder, simply click the Browse button to select a new location. Otherwise, click the Next button.
Step
5
Another EULA? Yes, it's true. We're not exactly sure why WinMX chose to present it twice, but there it is. We compared the text and the two agreements are almost identical. That said, they're always worth reading, so please review and click the ACCEPT AGREEMENT button when you're ready to proceed.
Step 6 At this point, WinMX has been installed on your machine and you'll be presented with a configuration wizard. The program will ask you to make sure you're connected to the Internet. When you are, click Next to continue.
Step 7 You'll need to select a unique username and specify your geographic location. Then you'll be prompted to choose a folder where incoming (downloaded) files will be saved. In most cases, you can accept the default folder, but if you'd like to change this setting, simply click the Browse button. Once you're ready, click the Next button.
Step 8 The next screen asks you what types of files you'd like to share with other users. For example, if you have photos of your tricked-out car you'd like to share with the world, you should select pictures.
Note: Using this product to make copies of copyrighted material may be illegal. CNET does not encourage or condone the illegal copying of copyrighted material.
Step
9 The next screen is very important: this is where you select which folders on your hard drive you'd like to share. You may be tempted to click the Scan Hard Drive button, which will look for media files across your hard drive. We strongly recommend you do not select this option, as it could lead to you inadvertently sharing files you didn't mean to share or files you cannot legally share. If you don't want to share those photos from your drunken night out on the town, exercise great caution. Usually, the single default folder is adequate. Once you're finished, click the Next button.
Step 10 Good news! You're almost done. On this screen, you'll need to select your Internet connection speed. If you're connecting from home, you probably have a cable or DSL connection. If you're not sure of your connection speed, simply leave the setting as unknown. When you're ready to proceed, click the Next button.
Step 11 Whew! Almost there. WinMX will now try to automatically configure itself to match your connection speed. If you encounter any problems, simply click the Manual Configure button. Finally, you'll need to select a preferred color scheme. After that, installation is complete and you're ready to start using WinMX.
