"Effective IP Masking"
Version: Hotspot Shield 2.65
Pros
1) Masks my IP to appear in the US (but not where I actually live) even if I leave the country
2) Enables access to paid services when I'm travelling that normally can't be accessed outside the country
3) Easy to click on and off as neededCons
1) Too many ads - note the banner ad can be removed by using the Chrome extension Ad Block. But it also opens your browser every so often to show you it's web page (haven't found a way to prevent this yet).
2) Can cause problems logging into some programs that react to unusual login patterns (such as MMO games, especially those with authenticators and Gmail). The MMO problem requires disabling the shield, while the Gmail problem can be remedied by logging in via web browser (after doing this once I have not had to do it again to use Outlook or Windows Live)
3) Be alert during installation that it will change your default browser to IE if you do not uncheck this option.Summary
A useful tool if you want to appear to be in the US when you aren't, or if you don't want your location tracked in general. Major irritations with the free version have simple solutions if you don't want to upgrade. The only thing I haven't been able to do is stop it from opening it's own web page every so often (though strangely this only happens on my laptop, not my desktop - if I find out why I will update my review). This is a minor annoyance for the privacy it affords and the ability to access my paid American services during my frequent absences from home.

"Behaves like Malware"
Version: Hotspot Shield 2.65
Pros
The reason this product is free is because it injects so many ads while you are browsing that it literally behaves like malware. If you don't believe me download a tool like firebug and watch the connections being made by your browser without hotspotshield and with hotspotshield. Every click you make is another penny in their piggy bank and you are their product.
Cons
They try to trick you into providing "Safe Search" when in reality they are just redirecting you to Conduit Search which is paid search.
Ads are injected in the page even though they try to claim they provide you with "privacy". Their message is totally conflicting.
They claim 10 million users but 90% of them are people who are trying to get around censorship and put up with the junky spyware behavior because they have no other optionsSummary
There are better free VPNs on the market that don't act as intrusively and don't lie to their customers about what it is they are truly selling (you!!)

"Can't un-install this software"
Version: Hotspot Shield 2.65
Pros
None I know of.
Cons
Wasted 1 hour trying to uninstall this software that I didn't even want in first place. I installed it in error while trying to install a program I did want. It, changed all my home pages.
Summary
Had to install an uninstaller to get rid of it.
PS: When I attempted to uninstall this program using the uninstall.exe file, it tool me to the company website. And the option 'uninstall anyway' did nothing. This happened when trying to uninstall using control panel as well. I am very dissapointed with the recommendation from c/net. This is the first time I have regretted installing something recommended by c/net. I will not be so trusting next time.
