    "This is MALWARE!!!"

    August 25, 2013  |   By biscuit00

    Version: Hotspot Shield 1.54

    Pros

Not much, websites can still track through the shield

    Cons

    CANNOT REMOVE THIS SOFTWARE!
Acts like a malware to try to get you to buy the full version.
When you try to remove it, it RUINS your computer, installs a bunch of dummy versions of itself on network so that you can no longer access the internet.
After uninstall, will take you a day to fix everything, almost forcing you to do a full system recovery.
All network hardware drivers are hijacked by this program upon uninstall.
    DO NOT DOWNLOAD!!

    Summary

THIS IS MALWARE!!! DO NOT DOWNLOAD!!

    "Scam scam scam"

    May 2, 2011  |   By Jeavany

    Version: Hotspot Shield 1.54

    Pros

Does what is says, but as mentioned above it does so at a cost. A large one!

    Cons

I just had to do a system restore because of hotspot shield. It hijacked my web browser and would not allow me to use google search, at all. It would instantly redirect me to a very nonfunctional web browser. Even uninstalling it did not work.

    Summary

After doing a system restore I gave hotspot shield one more shot just to confirm my suspicions (that is was actually hotspot to blame) and of course after reinstalling the issues instantly returned.

    Keep away from this company!!!!

I really cant believe that people have left positive reviews.
Are we using the same version of hotspot shield?
It just makes no sense that some people experience such major issues while others do not.

"Hijacks your internet connection, floods you with ads"

    December 4, 2010  |   By htgearhead

    Version: Hotspot Shield 1.54

    Pros

It does what it says but at a price. There has to be better alternatives out there.

    Cons

Constant interruptions from ads, crashed when I tried to uninstall it in Vista.
No more internet connection if you try to remove it.

    Summary

I had to use system restore to get rid of this junkware. My internet stopped working and windows network diagnostics told me there were driver errors in both my LAN and wireless connections after I tried to uninstall it.

"One of the worst choices you could possibly make ..."

    December 1, 2010  |   By chrisgabrielc

    Version: Hotspot Shield 1.54

    Pros

    Absolutely NONE.

    Cons

If you have a decent or even half decent security software installed on your system you will totally not install this software.

    Summary

If you want to encrypt your traffic (cabled or WiFi) you have several decent free choices. I don't even know how this joke made its way on download.com, who are normally screening stuff pretty well otherwise.
Try installing this with ESET, Kaspersky, Symantec, McAfee or I'd assume any antivirus software ... and you will be prompted to allow a LOT of dodgy exceptions to things that "fans" (actually individuals endorsing the soft because they have something to gain out of it) call "just false positives".

"Does what it is supposed to."

    November 29, 2010  |   By Ferretkeeper

    Version: Hotspot Shield 1.54

    Pros

Quick set up. Allows access to location blocked content through local proxy IP address. Not a lot of lag so far, even when streaming HD content(doubtless helped by the time differential). IP masking when / if required. It works.

    Cons

Balloon popup reminder. I know whether it is on or not !

"VPNs are a good idea, but look elsewhere"

    November 19, 2010  |   By lisasimone

    Version: Hotspot Shield 1.54

    Pros

Gave me a virtual IP address.
    Install was straightforward.

    Cons

ASK toolbars installed even though unchecked
Can't comment "content previously flagged as abusive or spammy"
    Banner ads, redirects
    Uninstall crashed.
Toolbars reappear in IE, directory not removed, random popups for "Turn on InPrivate filtering?"

    Summary

I still don't have it completely off my system. I think I've provided enough cons to make anyone think twice about installing this software. There might be more I could write, but I have to restart my computer again now ...

"Destroyed my internet connection on XP computer"

    November 17, 2010  |   By IraW

    Version: Hotspot Shield 1.54

    Pros

None - it destroyed my TCP/IP

    Cons

I installed as directed. I was unsatisfied with its performance so I clicked on its uninstall utility, and it appeared to uninstall OK until I was unable to connect to the internet after uninstalling. I rebooted an no internet. My TCP/IP is gone.

    Summary

After uninstalling it, i could not connect to the internet. I rebooted, and still no internet. Browser, Outlook, and other web functions all failed. they could not connect. I checked my network connection, and my network card showed up fine in device manager, and it said that it was working properly, but when opening up the network properties the network card listed was blank, and TCP/IP did not show up on the network listing. I went to add a PROTOCOL, and it would not add. I went to the Windows INF directory to Nettcpip.inf and tried to install it without success.

Tried to recover from several SYSTEM RESTORE points without success.

I read Microsoft KB 811259 and followed the instructions explicitly without success.

    ipconfig /renew did not work.

MSINFO32 - NETWORK - COMPONENT - PROTOCOL shows that there is no TCP/IP installed. Tried removing the WINSOCK entries from the registry, and then reinstalling Nettcpip.inf again with no luck.

Somehow Hotspot Shield destroyed my TCP/IP

    Stay away from Hotspot Shield.

"Generally very good. Pop up ads annoying though"

    November 16, 2010  |   By timspear

    Version: Hotspot Shield 1.54

    Pros

Encypts as it should, let's you view "adult" content in McDonnalds, lets you watch Hulu in the UK.

    Cons

It has loads of ads, banner and pop up, although only when it is running and you can close them. Turning it and especially off tends to involve clicking a fair bit of "are you sure?" stuff.

    Summary

    Good points

    a) It does what it's supposed to and encrypts your wifi.
    b) That means that with hotspots that try to censor what you read (eg Starbucks) it gets around the problem as Starbucks/bt cannot tell what you are downloading. Kind of handy as alot of legit stuff gets blocked as "adult content"
    c) If you are non US, you can watch US content as it routes your internet via a US data center. Yey, I can watch the Daily Show etc in the UK.
