"Over-priced, Erroneous Trial Period, No Support, ..."

Website states 2 months trial period, product states 30 days trial. Two messages to developer unanswered.

I like the product, but it's over-priced. It's better than MT-Newswatcher (free), but I will go back to MTNW because of the price, the erroneous trial period claims, and the lack of a response from the developer. He's either on a vacation longer than anyone else in the world, or developing Hogwasher was too much for him and has been committed without e-mail, or his life has expired, or has washed his hands of us due to his egotistical outlook on his creation.

I might have paid his price; I like Hogwasher better than any other newsreader I have tried on a Mac. However, without any response to my queries, I cannot feel comfortable paying for it. I should, at least, have my additional month of trial to reel me in.

      "Excellent newsreader"

I think I've tried all of the Mac newreaders, and I'd say that this is the best of them. I still have a soft spot for MT-Newswatcher, but its feature set hasn't changed in years, and at this point it's sadly fallen behind. Hogwasher has a great feature set, it's stable, and it's actively being supported and developed. I do agree that it would be good to bring back the manual.

Tried it because everyone says it's a good newsreader. After a day of studying the user guide and vainly trying to make it work, I reluctantly trashed it; seems one needs a degree in Zen. And who ever asked them for an e-mail client!? Nice interface, though. Ah well, back to Thoth.

      "Hogwasher RULES!"

      Summary

Hogwasher,Thoth and Unison are the best Newsreaders for OSX. Hogwasher is more Mac-like in its GUI and I like it for its style and speed. The developer (Kurt) is a responsive individual that really cares about his registered users. The price is well worth it! The only feature missing is SSL but the developer has informed me that this is a high priority item that he is working on for a future update. As far as I know the only Newsreader that has this security feature is Unison . If anyone knows any other newsreader with this feature please let me know. However,Hogwasher even without this feature is still well worth the price as it includes your mail as well as newsgroups.

      "The hog died"

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.

Hogwasher is a fine tool, but there is still much to do.

      nbsp;

But there was no update for more than a year, no change of their website ... and no more reply on mails regardless of your concern.

It seems they stopped supporting Hogwasher completely.

"Left me pining for MacSOUP :-\\"

      October 02, 2005   |   By Wizardling

      Version: Hogwasher 4.2.2

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
First up, Hogwasher isn't a bad Usenet client. For some people I'm sure it's quite good. But frankly, I doubt these people care much about efficient newsreading. I do.

I wasted an hour struggling with the totally inadequate help (it took me a while to work out the concept of Archives - there was zero explanation of their use at the web site or in the help file. Only the most minimal, unhelpful description of what they were). It makes me wonder how on earth a newbie to Usenet could EVER manage to work out Hogwasher.

I also failed to find equivalents for MacSOUP's ability to tag posts and whole threads for later reading (I saw a 'mark thread option, but it seemingly did nothing - I hate that when I see no result and get no feedback. I'm not saying I want a freaking dialogue box for every little result, but some audio or visual cue telling me what I did had/couldn't have an affect would be appreciated).

Nor could I automatically purge ONLY read articles after a set time had elapsed since downloading them. It was either all or nothing. What am I supposed to do if I'm treating Hogwasher as an offline client (downloading article bodies immediately using a filter)? MANUALLY sort out old read articles and delete them?

Lastly, I could not control click on a word to automatically highlight it and open a contextual menu for it, as I can in virtually every single other MacOS X piece of software I own - ***?!? :-( I actually had to select the word manually by either double clicking or otherwise, and THEN I could control click on it. Same goes for any other elements, such as folders in the browser. First you have to select, then control click - gah! How utterly tedious! :-(

All in all I'll just have to hope MacSOUP gets an overhaul someday, cause till then it's the only decent offline GUI Usenet client for OS X IMHO *deep sigh*

Oh, and of course - I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the _unbelievably_ high price for Hogwasher. How is that possibly justified? Though, to tell you the truth - I might JUST have paid it, if only Hogwasher had been better. I'm THAT desperate for a modern MacSOUP! ;-)

"Hogwasher 4.2.2 the king of binary downloads"

      December 22, 2004   |   By VerneA

      Version: Hogwasher 4.2.2

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Looks like they fixed the memory leak, and multi-threaded downloads now work as they should (now that you can download direct to disk instead of encapsulating them in the newsgroup file).

Right now, according to Net Monitor I'm getting between 394-432 KB/sec on my alledgedly 3 mpbs Comcast connection using four connections to Giganews unlimited. HW's virtual memory load has remained consistent at about 273 MB with little fluctuation - to give you a comparison, Toast is using about 286 MB so HW's memory load is not excessive.

Part reassembly which would bottleneck and slow to a crawl in 4.1 is now taking a trivial amount of time (assembling 9.5 MB parts from 16 segments) - about 2-3 seconds.

BTW, this is taking place as I'm posting this on a Powerbook 17, with a DVD data burn Toasting in the background.

      Life is good! :-)

      "Memory footprint way too high"

      Summary

I am giving v4.2 a testdrive, but it has an unbelievable high memory foorprint since v4.2....last night I was downloading some binaries out of a newsgroup, and noticed also that my dual 2 Ghz G5 with 1.5 Gb RAM was getting very slow, I saw that because of Hogwasher there was over 1 Gb of real RAM in use and a total of 5 !!!! swapfiles with 2 Gb in total was in use!!!!!!!! That to me is a bit unacceptable....Unison doesn't have that kind of footprint....

Well this release seems a lot better than the previous versions of Hogwasher I tested. Version 4 finally has all the features I needed for both Mail and News and I decided to make the move from MacSoup. Really a great app :-))

      "it's worth the learning curve"

      January 26, 2004   |   By JDar

      Version: Hogwasher 3.1

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Due to Hogwasher's power and flexibility there is a bit of a learning curve and it's worth it. HW has worked through all the OS upgraes into Panther and has never given a moment's trouble. The filters are expecially powerful and easy to set up. While reading downloaded messages the ability to grab a single msg that looks interesting is appreciated. HW has been well worth the money.
