Publisher's Description
From Beeblebrox.org:
HashTab is a Windows shell extension which adds a tab called "File Hashes" to the Windows Explorer file properties. The tab contains the MD5, SHA1 and CRC-32 file hashes. These are common hashes that are used to verify the integrity and authenticity of files. Many download sites list the MD5 hash along with the download link. The HashTab makes it very simple for Windows users to check these hashes on any file on the system without using external tools. The screenshot to the right shows an example.

Version: HashTab 3.0
Pros
very flexible in showing many types of hashes, author responded to question and feature suggestion
Cons
may not be completely obvious how to change which hashes are shown while you are waiting for a multi-gigabyte to compute
Summary
excellent, 5-stars!

Summary
Like most computer users, at some point in your computer's life you have installed software that you downloaded from the Internet. This is a risky thing to do, because although you hopefully trust the maker of the software, the files you receive could have been maliciously modified either in transit over the Internet, or (perhaps more likely) while sitting on the server prior to the download. When you install downloaded software without verifying its integrity, you run the risk that you are also installing viruses or spy software on your computer.
To counter this risk, many software providers will provide you with a hash to verify the integrity of the software post-download. Hashes are theoretically unique for any given file content, so if the hash of your downloaded file matches the provided hash, you have received the file in the form intended by the software provider. If not, your file may have been tampered with. (Hashes could also mismatch if your download was inadvertently corrupted, although TCP/IP makes this less likely.)
Unfortunately, most people don't usually check the hash, which limits its usefulness. HashTab is great because (in Windows) you can see the hash very easily, by right-clicking and selecting Properties, and then going to the File Hashes tab. Now that checking hashes is so easy, you can turn it into a standard practice.
There are still some risks. For example, the software itself could be inherently bad. Or, the web page where the hash is listed could itself have been hacked (to list an incorrect hash). Also, there are some emerging weaknesses with the MD5 algorithm, so SHA1 is preferred (HashTab supports both).
That said, checking file hashes is a good best practice, made very easy by HashTab. Hopefully the existence of HashTab will encourage more software providers to make hashes of their downloads available to end users on the download page. -
"Couldn't be simpler or more useful!"
Version: HashTab 3.0
Pros
The setup was instant. I was able to right-click a download where it displayed the file hash in all the common formats. It even has a spot to paste in the hash and let it compare it for me! Perfectly simple.
Cons
OK, this is NOT a con. But, it would be cool if HashTab would recognize that I had a hash in my copy buffer and pasted it for me while also indicated a hash match or not. That is just me reaching for something to say tho.
Summary
The product is simple and helps reinforce the proper behavior that virtually every internet user should be using when downloading applications from untrusted intermediaries.
