Hangaroo (Hardy Creations) is an addictive word game that is part hangman, part Wheel of Fortune, and lots of fun.
The program's interface is intuitive and very attractive, with high-quality graphics. We review a lot of games and we're quite used to subpar design, so Hangaroo was a pleasant surprise. The object of the game is to figure out a word or phrase from a given category--everything from TV shows to famous Egyptians--by guessing the letters that go in the blanks. Each time you make an incorrect guess, the noose tightens around the kangaroo's neck; after four wrong letters, a trapdoor opens and the kangaroo drops, only to ascend as a cranky-looking angel. We admit that the hanging kangaroo is a little gruesome--you never had to think about that in much detail when playing pen-and-paper hangman--but it's handled tastefully. There's no Help file, but none is needed.
An extra bit of interaction comes from the sassy kangaroo, who will both cheer your correct guesses and heckle you when you're wrong. Users should be aware that this game isn't for kids; there's nothing inappropriate in it, but most kids will find the words and phrases way too difficult. They were challenging even for this well-read adult. If we have any complaint about Hangaroo, it's the repeated inclusion of references to the creator and his wife and son; the first time it was kind of cute, but after that it got annoying and seemed narcissistic. Hangaroo is free. It installs and uninstalls without issues. We highly recommend this program to all users.
