"the best, really"
Pros
-SUPER easy to use
-lots of parameters can be set up
-HD audio support (dtsHD to FLAC)
-x264 advanced
-MKV or MP4 containers
-so far never failed, and I did LOTS or ripping (using since 0.9.4)
-just get better every new version
-you can save any preset that you customize and put as default if you wantCons
the only con that I can find to it is that you have to bypass whith another app the protection of DVD's and bluray's. MakeMKV makes it real easy for free.
Some, not all VC-1 video codec bluray's don't work, it's not the end of the world cause the other softwares generally don't either, I used MediaCoder for thoseSummary
I did many tests whith lots of sofware, free and not and I have to say this works magic everytime. Since the last 3 years I ripped my entire colection of DVD's and HD movies and for such a smaller size they look amazing!
Works good on WinXP and Win7 but using linux is the best. The UI is better under linux and it's easy to install on Ubuntu. When having it under linux there's an update several times a month.
personnal recommendation:
always use the high profile as it gets a better quality movie. I always boost reference frame to 6 for regular movies and around 10 for animation.
b-frames 5 for regular around 9 for animation. Motion estimated method : uneven multi-hexagon. Constant quality @ 20 is perfect (22 for HD).
If you have a player that play MKV, its the best container outhere, MP4 is too limited for me (dosen't support DTS, FLAC, and more)
If your stock whith Apple products you can easily rip videos and sync them in your iPod, iPhone and iPad, but Android phones plays MKV out of the box and you just to copy paste the video in the phone (a breeze compared to Apple which is a pain in the but to sync files in it)
