"Big Disappointment"
Version: Haihaisoft DRM-X PDF Packager 1.0.0.3
Pros
Cost less than the alternatives
Cons
The PDF Reader Doesn't comply with the DRM profile of the file
The system is NOT stable
When few DRM profiles are involved the Reader authentication process get stuck!Summary
I've spent about 10 hours on the last 3 days evaluating Haihaisoft DRM-X encryption tool for plain PDF files. I really needed such a service and the cost seems to be reasonable for my budget. To make a long story short - big DISAPOINTMENT.
More then the "basic" problem that I've never succeeded to get to a stage, that the DRM protected file which I've created with their online tool, actually behaved like a protected file, their tools are not stable, display errors in several situations and don't behave consistently.
I've tried to protect a plain PDF file with a profile which allows 1 hour access to the file. The creation of the file went smooth. The problems start immediately after. You are supposed to open the file through a dedicated PDF Reader (from Haihaisoft), the file opens after an authentication session - no problem. The thing is that after an hour there is no problem to reopen it. It seems like their PDF Reader doesn't comply with the expiration profile embedded in the encrypted file.
To eliminate the possibility that I have done something wrong, I've asked their support to create a file DRM protected (with 1 hour expiration profile) and send it to me. Same results! I could open this file even a day after. When I've asked the support what is going on? The answer was: We checked it and here (at their premises) it works - go figure !?
From a profetional point view, this product hasn't matured to a QA stage yet! It has to be sent back to the development team!
Conclusion:
I've spend $12 on one month subscription, My suggestion is: Don't repeat my mistake! But if you do, make sure that your DRMed encrypted files actually behave how they supposed to.
I must emphasis that I checked only the "Protect a plain PDF" feature from DRM-X. I don't have any opinion on their other features.
