"Easy to Install, Easy to Use, Easy to Foul Up Your Calendar"
Version: GroupCalendar for Outlook 1.6.85
Pros
It looks great at first. Quick install. Seamless with Outlook. Stuff just appears as if by magic on the other machines. The ability to schedule on behalf of someone else is great. I was extremely happy with this software ... for about a day.
Cons
Does not work well if you have 2 machines with same calendar (e.g., desktop and laptop). It is especially horrible if you use some other software to sync those two calendars (e.g., Plaxo). Here's the scenario: I enter an appt on the desktop. GroupCalendar puts it in the group calendar. Plaxo replicates the appt onto the laptop personal calendar. GroupCalendar then replicates that same appt in the group calendar, so now I have two. God help you if you also have Plaxo keeping track of the group calendar.
But that's not all. G.C. looses track of stuff. It forgets from time to time which items you want replicated in the group calendar and which ones you don't. I had to keep opening items up, modifying them and saving them to get it to update. And, if you change your mind, well too bad, because G.C. won't. Once it thinks a given item is supposed to be (or not be) in the group calendar, you can't convince it otherwise, unless you delete the entire item (all copies of it) and start over.
It seems to forget who is the original owner of some items. Sometimes I had to delete other user items from my version of the group calendar, sometimes not. Sometimes they came back, sometimes not. In 24 hours I re-installed the entire software twice, and re-copied the blank ACCESS database 4 times.
And there's more. Let's say you decide to have G.C. move your entire personal calendar into the group calendar. Big mistake. Now you can multiply all of those headaches by the volume of your entire calendar. It started trashing my personal calendar. I started losing business appointments. Replicants of various entries grew like a virus. In trying to kill the replicants, I deleted the originals.
I'm sure a lot of my trouble was created by interaction w/ Plaxo. But there were so many glitches, idiosyncrasies, and messed up entries, I could not begin to isolate what the problem was. But, I give it two stars in case you (a) have only 1 computer per user and (b) use NO OTHER personal calendar syncing program.
