True to its name, this popular and affordable app's main functionality is converting graphic files--importing from some 200 formats and exporting to about 80 at last count, with a tremendously time-saving batch processor thrown in for good measure. But GraphicConverter also proves invaluable as a high-speed image editor that lets you quickly browse, resize, sharpen, adjust color, and optimize for the Web, all at a price that makes commercial packages blush.

GraphicConverter's interface hasn't quite kept up with its ever-growing feature set (and many of its most useful features can be accessed outside of the app anyway, through contextual menus), but what this app lacks in simplicity it more than makes up for with copious features. The app also includes extensive documentation, and the program's uber-diligent programmer (whom even Apple has called "one of the most conscientious developers in the shareware universe") provides frequent fixes and updates. Recent changes have included the ability to view images in a "digital light room" browser mode, a completely rewritten backend for support of 64-bit, added support for large images with more than 16,000 X 16,000 pixels, and many more fixes and minor feature enhancements.

If you're looking for a low-cost way to make quick edits to images or batch convert to other formats, this app is a no-brainer for Mac.

"Mainly a cosmetic improvement"

December 27, 2010  |  By trams88

 |  Version: GraphicConverter 7.0.2.108

Pros

The new magnifier

Cons

Having to pay for an upgrade. I am actively looking for another source. Maybe Picasa is the one.

Pros

Very easy scaling and trimming in preparing figures for publication
Convenient color controls

Moving small selected objects can be tricky because expansion can occur in place of object motion

Summary

Easy to use, very fast, handles all sizes

"Version 7 has a brand new look Good upgrade"

December 04, 2010  |  By louisberg

 |  Version: GraphicConverter 7.0.2.108

Pros

The new interface is different from version 6 and needs some time to learn. But, for the price, this is a good upgrade. The price of the product is very low compared to the usefulness. I work on a PC too and I do not get the same ease of use.

Cons

New interface needs some time to learn. Perhaps they went a littler bit over the top with features like those for slide show.

Summary

A must buy if you want to manage pictures.

"Slide show is so much worse than in version 7"

November 28, 2010  |  By davidputhenry

 |  Version: GraphicConverter 7.0.2.108

Pros

I didn't see anything improved in the slide show feature, at all.

Cons

For years I used versions before #7 to look at folders full of pictures in order to weed out the bad ones before adding them to my Lightroom library.

Summary

Why? Because Graphic Converter displays Raw files so much faster than Lightroom, and also because (before version 7) I could Option-Click to see the file at 100%, and thus see if it was sharp or not.

I have no idea why they would remove such a helpful feature, but it means I don't use the new version, after having searched for such a function for at for ten minutes, trying to figure out how to Option-Click and look at my photos at 100% so I can toss the ones that are obviously bad.

New versions of software are generally intended to add features, not remove them, especially such helpful and pertinent ones...

"*Excellent*"

 |  Version: GraphicConverter 7.0.2.108

Pros

Does everything I need it to. And much more.

Cons

The interface could use some minor improvements, but the Darkroom option is fine.

Summary

Updated on Dec 7, 2010

My comment that the interface could use some minor improvements is out of date. Version 7 has introduced a beautiful modern look to GC, which I much prefer to Photoshop.
