Version: Google SketchUp 7.0.8660
"frustratingly abstract and underpowered"
Pros: its free, pretty unique in its methods, simple and colourful
Cons: dimensioning is a pain
Summary: as a cad user i found google sketchup to be counter intuitive and frustrating, never mind the huge workload it adds if technical drawings are needed, especially in an iterative design process where parts of the drawing are likely to change, its extremely difficult to just go back and edit them.
tools are not powerful or varied enough
snaps can be over aggressive to drawing points, but there are no snaps to allow a point at 90 degrees or parallel drawing
while colourful, renders look like they're produced in paint
learning a true parametric cad program usually translates well into other cad programs, i use solidworks but am confident i'd be competent with pro engineer after a short while. don't expect this from google sketchup.
good for what it says on the tin, sketchups, not true modelling
