    Version: Google Earth

"Doesn't work: Error message when starting up"

    by Bam359 on June 29, 2005

Pros: I have used this program, its GREAT! (when it works) I downloaded it at work yesterday, and have seen everything from the Pyramids at Gisa, to the Grand Canyon(amazing!) to my own house - I think I can see my dog in my back yard!

Cons: When trying to use it:

    Error:

"We are unable to connect to the Google Earth servers to activate your account.

Please verify that your internet connection is working properly and retry your account activation"

When installing, the wizard indicates that this is actualy "Google Earth Plus" one of the non-free Google Earth versions (I think it costs $10.00)

Normaly when a program is completely unworkable I would give it 1 star, but this program when working is so good, that even though inaccessable (atleast to me) it is twice as good as a normal not working program.

Right, I didn't read the reply above mine carefully... ;) Glad you got it fixed.

"When installing, the wizard indicates that this is actualy "Google Earth Plus" one of the non-free Google Earth versions (I think it costs $10.00)" Yes, but the Free and Plus versions use the same installer. When you install Google Earth, you are esentially installing Google Earth Plus. Google Earth and Google Earth Plus are the same software, but you need a username, password, and license key to unlock the "Plus" features. Basically, when you install Google Earth, it looks for subscription data on your computer. (Most likely left behind by Keyhole, if you subscribed to it.) If it does not find any data, it validates your Google Earth installation as the Free version. If it finds subscription data, it will convert your Google Earth to "Plus." Then, when you start the program, a window will pop up that you can log in to. (The window should have the account username that the installer found inside it.) If the account you are trying to use is expired, there is a "Use free version" button that you can click. This will get you the free version. Vice-versa, if you want to upgrade to the Plus version, go to Help > Upgrade to Google Earth Plus.

I got this error on more then one computer when I tried installing it, I even tried shutting off firewalls, and bypassing routers - in the end nothing worked. This is why I posted the negitave review.

I think this error message was because for a time Google closed the beta. Which is why I downloaded the program here, instead of from google.

I came back a few days later to theses same computers, and everything worked fine. This program is great - I wish I could change my review of it
