"Slow & jerky -- I'll stick with 3.1.0621"

June 17, 2006  |  By drc

 |  Version: Google Earth 4.0.1563.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
The new v4.0.1563 is significantly poorer at rendering - it's slow, jerky, and blotchy. I remember the first time I downloaded one of the early betas months ago, and 'flew' on the Google-provided tour of Planet Earth. My eyes popped out of my head; I still remember my amazement at what the folks at Google had accomplished. I just tried the same tour with 4.0.1563, and it gave me a headache. The tour would generally leave a destination and fly away before the rendering of the stop was complete.

V4 has some nice UI bells and whistles -- too bad the core engine has regressed.

I'm using a Al Powerbook with 1 GB, the last of the PPC generation.

"Crashes on launching application"

December 10, 2008  |  By dmcdaniel1

 |  Version: Google Earth 4.3.7284.3916

Pros

This product will not launch on my IMac 10.5.5

Cons

Same: after downloading it I try starting it up and the second it starts up it crashes

Summary

Google support doesn't seem to have any fixes for this problem. Their support for Mac suck. People have written in about the same problem but no one shows in solution. I can run 4.2 fine but not 4.3

"Problems..."

July 21, 2007  |  By montylee

 |  Version: Google Earth 4.1.7076.4458

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've used this version on several newer Macs, but all have the same problems--poor imagery, errors, and problems navigating. I'd go back to the previous version if I could. This version always resulst in an image error (Server returned error trying to load image: http://geosite.ca/geosite-ge.gif) and then you have problems with navigation. The program has lots of problems finding places, even when you tell it the country (try navigating to Noto, Japan - site of the earthquake 6 months ago - it will take you to some place in Italy! It ignores the country of Japan completely). Keyboard commands do not all work like their help page says (some do, some don't). In short, I wouldn't pay for this program so its a good thing its free. No support, of course, and very little help from the forums. Having lost the ability to navigate in this version (MacBook Pro dual) makes this version worthless.

"Stuttery."

May 29, 2007  |  By Milford

 |  Version: Google Earth 4.1.7076.4458

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I upgraded my Google Earth to 4.1.7076.4458 as it recommended, and now all flying tours/directions stutter terribly, with abrupt jumps in altitude and jumps forward. I'm running it on a MacBook 10.4.9, so there shouldn't be any hardware problems, and indeed there weren't in the previous version. Silly me for overwriting it...now to search for an older version to revert to...

I think this software is fantastic and it keeps getting better with new images. Do yourself a favour, download it - find Mt. Everest and pull the world so that it turns on its own. You will be amazed by the 3D effect - Really.

"Just aweful!!"

I've been trying every version since Google Earth came out and the satellite image of my house has always been from over 2 1/2 years old!!! Come on Google, what's preventing you from getting more real-time imagery? 2 1/2 years old is just not acceptable.

"Great app., many uses and search works very well"

I use Google Earth frequently to locate businesses in my area. I use it to place available apartments and houses, too. Can't say enough good things about this FREE app. Keep it up, Google!

I'd give the Support/Documentation item a higher grade, but I never had to use either.

"Great product, but GPS support broken (for me)"

October 25, 2006  |  By nzphil76_dotmac

 |  Version: Google Earth 4.0.2093.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This is a fantastic aid to the traveller, geographer or casual Earth enthusiast.

I have one serious issue however; after paying for the upgrade to Google Earth Plus, so that I could get live GPS data into Google Earth, I have been unable to get Google Earth's GPS support working at all, in spite of following Google's instructions to the letter, and in spite of the fact that my GPS works flawlessly on dozens of other GPS-aware apps on my machine, including MacGPSPro, LoadMyTracks, GPSdX, Route 66, MacStumbler and more.

An email enquiry to Google Earth Support drew a form response (along the lines of RTFM), and I have not had any contact from their development team in spite of my offer to provide them any manner of debugging info that could help them improve their product (I am a Mac developer too!)

Its a Garmin Geko 301 connected via a Keyspan USA-19QW for the curious.. hardly a difficult combination to support, IMHO.

So a good product but be warned: if you are considering the upgrade to get GPS support, test it first on someone else's copy of Google Earth Plus first.

Will not open on a G5 running 10.4.8
Activity Monitor says it's using 100% of the processor power even after it's stopped 'bouncing' in the Dock...(and not opening)
Version 4.0.1 worked fine. Bah!

What's new in version 4.0.1563.0
  • Less Is More - A New UI- The most obvious change is a new and, we think, simpler user interface.
  • We've reorganized the data layers to make it easier to find layers and turn them on and off. The nav panel at the bottom of the screen is gone, freeing up more real estate for actual imagery. The nav panel tools are still accessible, though; the nav controllers are now in the upper right and the tools (measure, print, email) are in the new tools bar along the top. Free Feel To Change Your World Seeing buildings in 3D is one of the coolest things about Google Earth. And with this release, this feature is even better. For the first time, we support "textured" 3D buildings, meaning the bricks look like real bricks, the glass like real glass, and overall, the world looks more like, well, the real world. It's just one more step on the path of creating a life-like 3D model of the whole planet. There's just one catch - there aren't many photorealistic 3D building models out there. Yet. That's where Google Sketchup comes in.
  • With Google Sketchup, you can now create your own textured 3D models. Here are some examples:
  • Creating and Sharing Geographic Information – A New Type Of KML
  • The best thing Google Earth's got going for it is the creativity of the millions of users who are adding and sharing geographic information. And with Google Earth (Release 4 BETA), we've expanded that capability in “KML,â€? the file format Google Earth uses to add and share data.
  • One of the reasons that Google Earth is so fast is that when you're flying around, you're only streaming in the pieces of the imagery that you need. But until now, importing KML meant loading everything – it was either all on or all off. This meant that loading, for instance, the topographic maps for all of Yosemite would grind Google Earth to a halt. For this new release, we've built the same smart loading techniques into KML, which means you can overlay large data sets without sacrificing performance.
  • We've released versions of Google Earth in French, Italian, German, and Spanish.
  • We've made improvements to our GPS support (Google Earth Plus only)
  • We've improved the terrain, so peaks and valleys are more realistic
