Editors' Review

While Google Docs may not be a full-featured office suite, it does offer the essential functionality you need to edit documents when you're away from your computer and then share them online or invite others to view, edit, or comment on them.

Saves as you type: Whether you're online or offline, Google Docs saves your text as you type it, which is something that not all mobile office apps do. What's more, your documents get synced to Google Drive, where you can access them from different devices and operating systems.

Clean and organized interface: The app's streamlined interface with obvious icons and a handy left-hand side menu for quickly accessing Starred documents or Google Drive files makes the management of documents really easy, especially since your files appear in the app's main window in a list or as thumbnails, depending on your view choice.

Supports comments: Apart from the usual sharing features you'd expect from an app of its kind, Google Docs also has collaborative features that enable you to invite other people to view, edit, or comment on documents in real time. We especially like the comments integration, a useful feature for work-related files.

Doesn't let you import files: While it supports most of the common document formats, except for spreadsheets, you have to add them to your Google Drive account first before you can access them; there's no support for local files.

Takes its time to open files: Opening a basic document of just four lines takes three seconds on average, and the loading time tends to increase as the document size grows.

Bottom Line

If you use Google Drive, you should definitely grab the straightforward and useful Google Docs. However, don't expect it to be a complete office suite, in that it handles only Drive files and cannot open spreadsheets or edit PDFs.
