The default camera app for Google's Nexus range of smartphones and tablets, the new Google Camera, can now be installed on other devices, as well, and comes with an enhanced interface and a great Lens Blur feature.

Pros

Solid features: Apart from the straightforward Camera and Video modes, Google Camera also features three other modes: the self-explanatory Panorama, Photo Sphere for capturing high-quality 360 degree views, and our favorite, Lens Blur, which is something no other mobile camera app has.

Cutting-edge lens blur: The app's star feature, Lens Blur, uses clever algorithms and an advanced multiple-image processing technique to create a beautiful depth of field effect akin to that of a DSRL camera, focusing on the subject while blurring the background. While this feature isn't perfect, in that often you'll have to manually increase or decrease the blur after processing to get the best results, it's a fantastic tool to have on your smartphone.

Focused interface: Essential features are only a tap or a swipe away from the main window, while the sliding and tapping commands for changing modes feel intuitive and make the app highly practical outdoors.

Cons

No integrated preview/gallery: While you can view the latest image taken by sliding your finger to the left, there's no way to view all your images in a gallery; you'll have to use a separate app for that.

Resource hungry: Photo Sphere, Lens Blur, and Panorama involve sophisticated algorithms or image processing and won't work on your device properly if you don't have at least 1GB of RAM.

Storage issues: You can't change the location where images are stored, which means that on a smartphone you can't save images on your external SD card -- a limitation, which may render the app useless.

Bottom Line

In the end, Google Camera turns out to be neither the best nor the worst camera app for Android. Its storage limitations, high hardware requirements, and missing gallery make it a far-from-perfect choice, though its Lens Blur and other advanced features redeem it. At the end of the day, this app's a worthwhile download.
