"I have been using GoodSync for many years."
Version: GoodSync 9
Pros
I use GoodSync to keep files on my desktop and laptop in sync. With Windows 7 Homegroup, GoodSync will sync files without any hassels. I also use GoodSync to keep my various backup files current.
Cons
GoodSync has a sync anywhere function. I have not used it so I can not comment on it.
Summary
FYI:
Updated on Oct 5, 2012
I have 3 TrueCryp containers. One is the master and the others (on separate drives) are used for backup. In order to get GoodSync to work, with all contatines open, I had to rename the backup TrueCrypt files so they were different.
For example:
Secure Documents C: (V:) Renamed to: Secure Documents V: (V:)
Secure Documents C: (G:) Renamed to: Secure Documents G: (G:)
Updated on Jan 19, 2013I use GoodSync all the time and I like it. -
"Can't do without it"
Version: GoodSync 9
Pros
Has no problem syncing with Windows shares including my NAS boxes.
Correctly identifies files that have been moved to a different folder and apparently also moves them in the target rather than unnecessarily deleting and recreating them.
I routinely sync 300 gigabytes with hundreds of thousands of individual files and have never had the application choke.
You can review the exact details of what will be changed before executing the job.
The program stores a backup of the changed and deleted files in a hidden directory so you can recover mistakes. This can also be a con if the drive getting the changes is nearly full and you are making many changes.
Free testing period with the fully functional product.Cons
There are very frequent program updates. That the developers keep working on it is encouraging, but makes me worry about lurking bugs and what problems may later surface in my backups.
When a job reports errors, there's a message to click on the "errors button" but I've never been able to find this button. (You can work out what the problem was from the detailed job report)
It's not obvious that it's advisable to run the program as administrator in Vista or Windows 7 or you will get some failed deletion errors.
Requires on-line activation which is a problem when attempting to move the program to a new machine or new OS.Summary
I have been using this utility for a few years, both the previous version 8 and recently version 9, and find it well serves my needs.

"Poor auto sync performance"
Version: GoodSync 9
Pros
Easy to use UI. Stable, easy to use and configurable.
Cons
Very slow auto sync startup speed over sftp compared to alternatives. 30 seconds vs 1 - 2 seconds.
Summary
Some protocols, such as sftp are slow compared to other products such as webdrive or expandrive which are MUCH faster at detecting and synchronizing changes.
You'll notice that an sftp-server process is started each time a file is changed with this program, whereas programs like webdrive start up a sftp-server which appears to be reused to avoid some connection overhead.
It was taking 30 seconds to connect to my server with this program for every change vs 1 second for a sync with other software.
I contacted support and they were unprofessional and unsupportive to the point of being rude, suggesting I get a better sftp server or connection.
Their support suggested it would be easier for me to fix my server than rewrite a massive program that has been rewritten 3 times already, which is a poor excuse.
The point is that out of the box other programs work better in this regard. So even if this is a configuration problem, the program could be doing more to guard against this out of the box. A quick check of my server and it seems okay, plus I tested this on a completely different setup on a different network.
Also after suggesting it was a problem with my server, no fix could even be suggested, so the request seemed out of their support personnels depth.
I previously contacted Expandrive about improving some aspects of their product and they were much more responsive and helpful, and said improvements are on the way, this was a much better support experience and a much better example of how a company should be run.
