"Upgrade over Mainstream Version"
Version: Go-OO 3.2-13
Pros
quite satisfactory
Cons
Much faster to boot up and to load files. The interfce is improved slightly but still retains the same'feel' to it. A top quality program, better than Microsoft office and not because it is free.

Summary
For several months I used the mainstream version of OpenOffice 3.2 under Win 7. I recently replaced it with the goOO version after de-installing the mainstream version.
I have been pleasantly surprised. This goOO version is indeed noticeably faster than the mainstream version. Also the menu icons are bolder, simpler and more understandable. It even has colored spreadsheet tabs, whereas this feature was missing from the mainstream version. And the same extensions are compatible in both versions.
Essentially goOO is the same as OpenOffice, but it has been tweaked to be faster and more user-friendly. -

"Go-OO has some significant new features"
Version: Go-OO 3.2-13
Pros
As per the article " handle DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX formats... supports SVG files. Graphics ...improved, VBA support, etc These mean that Go-OO can in fact do things that Microsoft Office can't , namely include legacy Office 2003 and before add ins..
Cons
Doesn't quite replace Microsoft Office 2007 in that some detailed features, collaborative features, web features, research features and enterprise functionality of the MS suite aren't fully replicated.
Summary
Good choice amongst the Open Office family and is at the point where the average person could be satisfied with Open Office and, for cases where compatibility is an issue, access to a machine that has Microsoft Office on it, like at a library or on the web.
I've heard that Go-OO is the basis for Oxygen Office, which gives added functionality and templates and can serve as replacement for most if not all of Office 2k3 and a lot of Office 2007.
Microsoft has better web integration and enterprise features, but home users, students, and most SMB's can survive and prosper with Go-OO and web based add ons. These require a more effort but offer less bloat and less dependency on the whim of a single vendor.
Another interesting option is to combine Open Office with other open source programs to provide competitive or likely superior capabilities to the Microsoft products. For example, a combination of Open Office Writer, Scribus and LyX will meet or likely exceed the capabilities of Microsoft Word and Publisher. A professional writer or author would miss nothing and, with occasional access to the Word and Publisher software in case of incompatibilities arising, can function on a professional level without using MS Office products. Similar combinations can be created to for the other components of MS Office.
Yet MS remains the 600 pound gorilla that furnishes the one integrated, fully functional suite of programs that outfit a modern office. For those with more time, less money or a strong commitment to competition the Go-OO Open Office suites supplemented with mature open office tools will let you play with the big dogs.
