"It backs up Gmails to restore them to Gmail. Whoop."
Version: Gmail Backup 0.107
Pros
It is free.
Cons
Can't really think of anything.
Summary
It's probably wonderful if you want to back up your Gmail so you can restore it to Gmail, although i am having difficulty figuring out when i would want to do that, since i have never needed to so far. i was looking for something to back up my emails so i could copy them to disk and clean out my account, yet keep certain email exchanges. This program doesn't do that. i found it slow to copy my emails as well. It is coming off my computer tomorrow.

"Gmail mailbox Backup"
Version: Gmail Backup 0.107
Pros
The messages are stored in the local directory
Cons
Label assignment is stored in the file labels.txt which is the plain text file and it pairs the e-mails stored in the file described above with the assigned labels.

I can say that it would be nice if I could access and search my backed-up emails for data, as easily as I can when they are still in Gmail.

"Works for Me!"
Version: Gmail Backup 0.107
Pros
Backs up Gmail emails so that they can be accessed from a single folder of the hard drive.
Cons
If you want to search for data in your backups, this can be time consuming.
Summary
I downloaded this so that I could backup my emails and delete them. It did the job. I can say that it would be nice if I could access and search my backed-up emails for data, as easily as I can when they are still in Gmail. But, you can't have everything, and this does the job it is supposed to do.

"Seems to work."
Version: Gmail Backup 0.107
Pros
Connects easily to Gmail. Stores data locally as directed. What's not to like.
Cons
Of course, I've not yet had an occasion to restore, so it's an untried commodity.
Summary
Gmail Backup 0.107 is one of two (price: free!) tactics I use to protect years of email: Thunderbird being the other. As above, saves fine; restore as yet (and, let's face it, hopefully never!) tested.
