"Speed and drive mapping is great"

    October 7, 2010  |   By carl2222cn

    Pros

Mapped local drive for Google Docs, Windows Sky Drive or whoever.
Does not "convert" files so when I open Excel its Excel...not Google's transformation.
Worked faster than accessing through browser.
    True cloud computing for free!

    Cons

Included software over my head..but I don't use it. I use the mapped drive only

    Summary

I love having a mapped drive IN WINDOWS FILE EXPLORER to Google docs, Windows live Sky drive and others....it's MUCH faster than starting up a browser to access Google docs (for example). It's always right there like an external hard drive. It's not going to be as fast as local...the data is on the internet after all...and the speed depends on who's servers you are using. But it seems pretty darn fast to me.
Also the docs are not converted...so when I open an Excel doc it is Excel that is opening it...not Google's transformation...and everything works...whatever complex macros or formulas I have.
Some people may not like the software...for example the backup routine...but I don't use that...I like to write custom batch files for my backups...or just drag and drop! I don't even click on the software that came with it. I just click the "click to mount" icon that is on the mapped drive if I need to add more storage...for example add "Windows Live Sky Drive" in addition to "Google Docs". There is only one mapped drive, and each storage provider is a separate folder in that drive.
So I'm giving this a stellar rating because I have never seen drive mapping to free internet storage, and it works great without transforming your files. This is true Cloud computing for free! I can access my same data from the office or the on the road with my laptop...using EXCEL,WORD or whatever client...instead of a browser...without stupid Sync software and version control issues!! My caveat is those looking for more than a mapped drive may need a more thorough review of the software. If I'm a neophyte and there is plenty of drive mapping to free internet storage, then please let me know other options. I haven't run across it yet. And syncing DOES NOT COUNT! I want true cloud computing!
