"higher quality than Skype, and there is free encryption"

    by hellokitty_girl on June 20, 2006

Pros: Skype was so bad, and I wondered what else I could use. been using Gizmo for several months now, and never had any problems. the sound is so crystal clear, even talking outside the U.S.. voicemail feature is excellent, and its so easy to record the calls (quality is very good too).

lastly, the inventor of PGP recently wrote Zfone which encrypts your VoIP calls so that not even the government can snoop on your VoIP calls!! its free, and works with Gizmo but not Skype.

Cons: Skype is now owned by eBay, and apparently is offering free calls temporarily to landline phones and even cellphones (via SkypeOut). new folks might thus be tempted to use Skype, but really the sound quality sucks (I used Skype for several months). also, Gizmo is open source, while Skype is doing everything it can to shut out non-Skype computer programming. not friendly at all, so I don't trust Skype either.

btw, I don't IM, so I can't talk about other people's complaints about not being able to IM friends using MSN, AIM, etc..

"Some things are free, just not everything"

    by noneed2login on January 16, 2008

Pros: I like how the SIP-to-SIP calls are free (calls to people using Gizmo, OpenWengo and other SIP services).

I also like how it integrates in with my Google Talk and MSN chats.

I also like the free voicemail and conference call features (once you're using the SIP #, not the Gizmo Call In number)

Cons: The call in service (the non-free part) is $35 per year, and the call out service is $0.02 per minute. I don't think it's the cheapest out there, but it's cheaper than Skype.

Sometimes a little buggier than Skype.

    "Great voice quality."

by alnjk on July 13, 2006

Pros: After trying more then 20 similiar programs only this one and Google-talk had superior voice quality and were consistent in their connections whether dialup or high speed.

Cons: Rather large footprint and medium system resource usage.
