"Great - did every job I wanted"

    September 6, 2010  |   By gdittmer

    Version: Get Backup 2.4.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I just upgraded to 10.6 and was looking for something apart from Time Machine that would give me precise control over my backup jobs. I had previously used finder copies, PSyncX, psync on the command line and iBackup. I used GetBackup to sync my home directory, my picture library (kept separately) and my Itunes folder (also kept separately) over old backups and had all jobs done in few minutes without any flaw. Despite having used other tools before, just the differences were copied.

I also reformatted a Firewire disk to hold a boot partition and used GetBackup to copy a bootable DVD onto that. Before starting the copy, GetBackup warns that the copy will not be bootable. False warning, the copy boots perfectly.

Really feels like the good old DiskFit (predecessor of Retrospect) more than 20 years ago. Definitely recommended. It is amazing to see that the concept of finder-readable backups is still the best when supported by a well done and easy to use backup program.

    "Doesn't work at all"

    July 9, 2010  |   By Christian Gras

    Version: Get Backup 2.3.2

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This program doesn't work at all, it fills the target volume with thousands and thousands of empty files with strange name.
I tried two successive version: 2.3 then 2.3.2 and they behave the same.
The first time I had more then 120 000 files to remove in the target volume, next time I was more careful, and only 35 000 files were created in few seconds before I can stop the process.
The only way to stop the process is to reboot source computer, because the job is done by a background daemon.

    "Excellent and Easy to Use"

    November 7, 2009  |   By Kerry Dawson

    Version: Get Backup 2.2.5

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have used numerous backup packages and this is one of the easiest that I have ever used. It is very intuitive and straightforward. Its an nice addition to Time Machine in that I run it overnight when all applications are shut down so that I know that the backups are reliable. Restores are rock solid. I have used products such as Retrospect and although it is absolutely excellent it is overkill in many ways plus its complicated. This is not. I also have Data Backup which I really like but it is not working at all reliably under Snow Leopard. It is a straightforward app also and not the overkill of Retrospect but it is not as easy to use as Get Backup. I'd highly recommend it.

    "Get Backup failed"

    September 3, 2009  |   By AMCarter3

    Version: Get Backup 2.2.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I was given a copy of Get Backup in return for doing a review. Unfortunately, it failed twice to complete a simple backup of my 10.5 GB Documents folder to a backup drive. Since it will not perform a simple backup for me, my review will be short - It did not work.

The appeal of this program is that it allows you to backup any folder and use any backup media. I like that feature a lot. It also supports synchronizing multiple drives or folders so that they have the same versions. It will not create a bootable backup.

On the surface, it looks like a nice, simple, intuitive backup program. The main screen seemed easy to understand and allows one-click setup for backing up iTunes, Mail and iPhoto libraries and your Documents folder. I tested it by attempting to backup my documents folder and, separately, my iPhoto library. After 21 minutes of using 45-75% of my CPU, it gave me an error message saying the backup had failed. After 3 attempts, I quit. I did not attempt to synchronize anything.

In contrast, for example, SuperDuper uses less than 2% of my CPU and takes less than 3 minutes to perform an incremental backup of my entire 102 GB harddrive and it has never failed in the 3+ years I've owned it.

My conclusion is that BeLight Software has a potentially good product, but it needs more work to be a real competitor.
