A unique championship mode distinguishes this outstanding mah-jongg solitaire program. In the trial version of Gekko Mahjongg World Championship, the Classic mode only unlocks the traditional solitaire layout, with 35 other layouts displayed, but not playable. Though that one layout will keep you occupied, the Championship mode blew us away. You're presented with a series of puzzles that increase in difficulty, and you compete for the best solving time. The first few levels take a minute or less each, and the time rises quickly from there. You can upload your scores for both Classic and Championship modes, though users of the trial version get docked 1,000 points.

The soundtrack files are fine, but we preferred playing to our own MP3s. The graphics look great, and you can customize the experience by downloading new sets or by putting JPEGs into the backgrounds folder. In another not-too-bothersome limitation, you can only download two expansions total, whether it's a tile set or music or background or theme. The program's only flaw was the lack of a hint function, but you can undo any number of moves. We heartily recommend Gekko Mahjongg World Championship.

Experience a new mah-jongg solitaire challenge: play the championship mode with 1,000 levels, each with a unique layout. Compare your scores with other players worldwide, using the Internet high-score feature. The application features two game modes: Classic and Championship, with 12 layouts to choose from in Classic mode and 1,000 unique levels in Championship mode. It features high-score tables for all game modes; both local and worldwide high-score comparison via the Internet; individual user profiles for as many players as you like; and integrated update/add-on functionality. Your own music and background graphics can be used; there are many additional background graphics; and game designs and tile sets can be downloaded for free from the Internet.
