If you want to make your own games, this is the program to try first. Game Maker installs quickly and launches automatically, starting up by generating a new project. A basic project includes sprites, sounds, background, paths, scripts, data files, time lines, objects, and room features, as well as game information and options, all of which you can configure freely. In particular, the application offers a good deal of control over sprites, which can be scaled, rotated, made partially transparent, and blended with a color. Each feature offers samples to show you how to create your masterpiece. All you need is imagination and the freeware's help file. You might not be able to create something, such as Doom or Heroes of Might and Magic, but mah-jongg and golf are doable. Though writing a game might seem intimidating, Game Maker brings it within reach.

"Great for beginners and advance programmers, perfect!"

May 25, 2010  |  By animaster78900

 |  Version: Game Maker 7.0

Pros

It's very flexible, I've worked with all versions of GM and they just get better. Nice programming language, not too limited on graphics, and you can pretty much make anything you can you can think of...depending on you knowledge of the GML.

Cons

Not really any, you may have to pay for it, but its only 20 bucks.

Summary

I've made 10 games in all my use of GM, all of which have little or no glitches(mainly cuz im that good) i've been able to make 2D and 3D games(6-2D, 4-3D). I'm currently working on a project with a little help from the flexibility of DLL's, and it's in full 3D and with some shader effects. If you wish to learn game making, and fast, use this program, because it is very flexible.

"Great for a first-timer!"

February 13, 2010  |  By summondice

 |  Version: Game Maker 7.0

Pros

Free, "first game" tutorial, moves fast, tons of options, very intuitive once you've seen what the buttons means, small on disk space and running (at least in what I've done with it so far). Not limited to the images and sounds that come with it.

Cons

It's not the full Pro version (which costs), limited graphics-wise

Summary

I downloaded this about three hours ago onto my Vista machine and am loving it. I'm not a programmer...hell I'm not even much of a gamer, but this little program is incredibly easy to use.

The download took some time, but really only about two minutes. Once downed, the install was fast and easy. I recommend reading the ReadMe file, but mostly because I always do.

I also recommend *not* going to advanced mode right off the bat because there is a tutorial that automatically pops up to step you through the basics of game creation. After going through the tutorial (skimming, if you're not-so-beginner) I feel confident I can find what I'm looking for in a given instance.

It's free and really is pretty intuitive once you've played with it for a second. I love that I'll be able to use pngs and midis outside of what it provides :)

Definitely recommended for a first-time game-maker and for anyone looking for a lightweight option with infinite possibilities.

"Awesome Software With Unlimited Potential"

February 13, 2010  |  By TweedSandwich

 |  Version: Game Maker 7.0

Pros

This software is pretty much only limited by the abilities of the operator. If you are good at Photoshop you can create amazing graphics and apply them. They offer a free version and a paid version - both of which have great features.

Cons

None that I've found.

Summary

This software is great. They offer a paid version (still pretty cheap) and also a free version. The thing I love is that the free version isn't one of those sad, watered down, featureless versions - this free version is filled with awesome features. It's also really easy to use. I'm not sure why other people are saying they had a problem learning it. Maybe they weren't committed, or maybe they didn't use the (free) tutorials, maybe they were expecting to download it and suddenly have a great game just fall from the sky and land in their computer... or maybe they just didn't get it so they gave it up. But if you stick with it and put in the *effort* that is required in order to create a great game, then you can do amazing things with this software. If you're really committed you can even by a GREAT book that takes you through all of the features and functions. Just use the tutorials (I'd also suggest picking up a copy of the book) you'll be completely fine and be figuring it out in no time. Making games takes effort and commitment (along with artistic skills, computer skills, and a great game idea). What this programs does is makes it easier for those with great artistic skills or a great game design to be able to *actually* create their game. I would strongly suggest this for students who are interested in interactive entertainment like video game creation. This is a great stepping stone and can help you make your first games and demos for your portfolio/demo reel. Do a great job with this program and you're definitely proving your worth and skills. Overall, great program, great concept, fun to use, great for making personal games or portfolio pieces, and a fantastic learning/educational tool.

... and yet you did. I don't understand the one star rating for something you never used. Did you check your system requirements? Did you try downloading it directly from their website?

I posted the above to another user - I have no idea why cnet also posted it to mine as an 'update'...

They make good salesmen as fakers.
