CNET Editors' review
Quickly and easily break apart files for emailing or moving across networks with this freeware file splitter, but don't expect split media file pieces to play.
GSpilt installs easily and works as a service from your context menu or through a Mac-like interface. With GSplit, you can simply point to a file and choose to split it. You can set the utility to default to a set number of pieces and specific placement, or have it question you each time. Using the novice-friendly interface is almost as easy. You follow the well-designed menus and answer simple questions. The program gets easier to use every time you split a file. Knitting the pieces back together is the easiest we've seen. The pieces are numbered and you simply execute the first one. Gsplit opens an informational dialog and combines the pieces almost instantly. Since the pieces are self-knitting, you don't need to send GSplit to those receiving your split files.
GSplit breaks apart any type of file, but isn't able to break apart media files into playable pieces. Free, novice friendly, and complex enough for advanced users, GSplit is one of the easiest recommendations we've made.
Publisher's Description
From G.D.G. Software:
GSplit is a free file splitter that lets you split your large files into a set of smaller files called pieces, easier to copy to floppies, CD, DVD or any removable disk; distribute over the Internet, networks; send by email or with file hosting services; share with friends and colleagues. GSplit also generates small self-uniting programs when splitting files, so anyone even without GSplit may restore your split files automatically. GSplit can split very large files (larger than 4 GB) and it provides you with a lot of splitting options (in addition to five splitting methods, including functions for large text files like server logs). You can load/save settings into profiles, and also automate it. Finally it features an intuitive graphical user interface (with skin support) that makes operations easy and fast. Context-sensitive help and animated tutorials are also available.

"Finally, a file splitter that actually works."
Version: GSplit 3.0.1
Pros
It works - many of the other ones are either crippled, don't support splitting after X number of lines or they puke on large files.
It is fast - took about 1 second to split a 600MB csv file into 6 pieces based on a split every 900,000 lines (I have a fast computer and SSD).Cons
Instructions are convoluted - I originally thought it didn't support splitting every X number of lines until I stumbled across a site that explained it. I completely overlooked it because their method of splitting every X number of lines is by using the hex ASCII code of 0x0D0x0A. Why not just have an option to split every X number of lines??? This is what happens when programmers/engineers design software. :)
It would be nice if it had the option to join text files that didn't already have the gsplit tags in them, for example concatenate 6 csv files into one file. I ended up just using the windows command "type" to do this and it worked fine. For those who care...
type filename1.csv >> ourputfile.csv
type filename2.csv >> ourputfile.csv
...etc...etc.
Of course if I was running Linux, I wouldn't have to spend hours searching for a mediocre app to do all of this because I could do it all from the command prompt (shell), but I digress.Summary
It splits text files fast.
It requires you to include the gsplit tags at the end of the file pieces if you want gsplit to be able to figure out how to put them back together.
It is free. -
"MALWARE HIJACKERS INCLUDED IN DOWNLOAD, BEWARE !"
Version: GSplit 3.0.1
Pros
Might be a good program if "Blekko" and "Spam Free" hijackers were not included, even if unchecked during installation.
Cons
HIJACKER MALWARE INCLUDED, BEWARE ... "Blekko" and "Spam Free" hijack your browser and search bar, and change numerous settings, even when unchecked.
Summary
CNET, Get rid of this malware infested download, please !

"It worked great for floppy chunks"
Version: GSplit 3.0.1
Pros
it was easy to use and worked great for my floppy project.
Cons
I don't know if it has a complete directory/folder split feature.
Summary
I was having trouble with RW CDs or the CD drive, the project was to get eMachine Windows98 software onto Compaq Vista using Sony USB Floppy Drive so I PKZIP compressed all directories into temp.zip a to z, Gsplit large files small enough for floppy, moved to Vista, Gsplit joined, then used another free good download 7-Zip to extract, not sure if it zips.

"If you have to time to waste... use it"
Version: GSplit 3.0.1
Pros
You can choose the size of the files for the split-results. To split a large file of several GB is ok by creating an .exe-file to merge the file-pieces again together.
Cons
The software-window is overcharged with a lot of text which is not really making the use efficient. To merge the files afterwards takes at least 10 times longer than the split-operation which made for me this software useless.
Summary
If you can waste your time to get the merge done, then use it. I prefer fast and simple to use software for such a purpose like GF Split & Merge!

"Useful once you understand it"
Version: GSplit 3.0.1
Pros
it has multiple ways to determine file size splits, and works quickly, and easily in the background.
Cons
I didn't give it 5 stars because it was a bit clumsy to understand how it worked from the initial launch. But once you get that down, I'd say it's a great utility to have for those huge files.

Did what it was supposed to do

The "Add Self-Uniting Functionality" option does not seem to be 100% persistent when saving and loading profiles.
