"Does not transfer to gps units"

    April 06, 2008   |   By artherstrasse

    Version: GPSNavX 2.13

    Cons

I suppose for those trusting the "waterproof" nature of laptops, their power demand and their footprint, this works. For me, I like a gps unit that I don't have to worry about being drenched, its long battery life and its robustness (they simply work).

    "Excellent navigation program"

    Version: GPSNavX 2.50

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
We've used GPSNavX for past two sailing seasons very happily. What a wonderful contrast with some of the clumsy efforts of other Mac-compatible nav programs. What is very encouraging (and helpful) : upgrades are frequent so the program gets better all the time!

"Very Nice! A Steal for $50!"

    Version: GPSNavX 1.80

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Compared to PC programs it has a ways to go in it's feature set, but they are $400 and this is only $50! It gets the job done, easy to plana dn plot, download to the GPS.

I've used NaviMaq, the only other Mac nav program for some time. This far surpasses it and even in earlyish development. Reads BSB charts just fine (I don't think WorldTiff is going to be a major marine format). The author has promised support for the new free NOAA vector charts soon. Has a (few) rough edges; routes seem to go on and off sometimes, restarting it seems to help. Lots of features missing, notably export/import of routes (you can just copy off the .plist files though). Works very well on my older Wallstreet PB running Jaguar and connects fine with my Garmin GPS48. Author seems to enjoy hearing from users and emails back very promptly.

    "Keeps getting better"

    Version: GPSNavX 1.51

    Summary

After watching the demo versions coming quickly and with great new features, I finally purchased GPSNavX. Runs great on Panther and just keeps getting better. Even before I purchased it, the response to my questions from the developer was outstanding. Anyone looking for a Nav package should consider GPSNavX. In fact, PC users should consider switching to Mac just for this package!

    Version: GPSNavX 1.46

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Just purchased GPSNavX. I'm a long-time user of Fugawi for PC, but my workplace just converted to Macintosh, so I'm converting to my "hobby" (boating) to the Mac as well.

The GPSNavX seems like a very nice program. Works well in initial trials. It's not a fully developed program yet, but the author seems to be very diligent at working on it. Responses to queries are very rapid and very clear.

I checked out the other Mac programs, and I concluded they were not up-to-speed for OS-X.This program is not excellent yet (having troubles downloading waypoints, for example), but the author is seriously working at it. He responds very rapidly to questions, and I'm very satisfied.

I think serious sailors should get the program "on principle." My boat (Michigan) is out of the water until next May, but the author offers a year of free upgrades. So to me it's a no-brainer--buy it and support the OS-X development.

    "Using GPSNavX"

    October 09, 2003   |   By tamacn

    Version: GPSNavX 1.40

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
As a long time user of Nav Programs on the Mac (sailed to NZ using Navimaq OS 9), I too was very concerned when I didn't see the existing programs upgrading to OS X. It looks like GPSNavX has stepped in to fill the bill.
The program is still in early stages of development, but it's easy to see that the author has a good command over OS X. As others have observed, he is working dilligently to add new features to this program. He has a good feel for how things should work together and be displayed. In just the short time I've had the program, numerous changes and enhancments have been made. (working with v 1.40 currently)
He dosen't seem to be offended by voluminus input. You send a question, you get an immediate answer (try that with MaxSea).
He is asking so little $$ to get this thing off the ground...I sent my fee in immediately.
I would encourage any other mariners out there using a Mac to get behind this product. I believe we will soon have a solid Nav Platform for OSX!

    "Great Support"

    September 01, 2003   |   By Scottdh

    Version: GPSNavX 1.20

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Tried version 1.23. Displayed maps well. Clean interface and recognized all normal NEMA 0183 sentences from a Raymarine Seatalk to PC interface. Author seems very driven and willing to improve the product. Responded to emails around the clock over the weekend. Well above and beyond the call of duty.
Some obvious features are missing... route planning, graphical waypoint editing, and waypoint upload to GPS. That said, I have every confidence this product will grow into a mature application with the commitment I saw over the weekend. I paid the $50 for the potential over the next year. Keep pushing. Version: GPSNavX 1.20

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
all the other, either formerly mac (maxsea) or current mac (navimaq), SEEMED TOTALLY UNABLE TO REALLY UNDERSTAND USING THE MACINTOSH FOR GPS NAVigation- navimaq has beeen 'working' on a 'macos x and don't have to change the monitors setting' solution for a year, with no visible progress.Maxsea, expensive to begin with, has totally abandoned the mac to enter the world of copy and dongle protected pc programs- what are they thinking?- there are a lot of better and cheaper pc probrams if you want to use an unreliable machine for the purpose and fuss with irq's. The current mac iteration of maxsea, which they will gladly sell you for 450 dollars, cannot detect any serial ports other than 'printer or modem', won't work properly under classic, and gets the tides wrong half the time. This (gpsnavx) developer responds overnight to questions and suggestions, understands the mac and navigation, and appreciates a truly modern, stable operating system- pay him for this program ASAP so he doesn't give up on us like all the others......

    "Practical, Inexpensive..."

    August 19, 2003   |   By iamdorian

    Version: GPSNavX 1.15

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
...and growing. These are all good features. In fact, we just used this program, in conjunction with the (Rayming) TN200 USB GPS receiver, and it worked like a champ. We were photographing locations for a travel-based web site, and needed accurate SAT-NAV GPS location data, and decided to use this approach rather than rely on a hand-held GPS and iffy softare to link the serial port output (the ONLY THING so far offered on mainstream models...PC-centric ALL) with the Mac via adapters. This USB-link approach with the TN200 appears fail-safe...it worked every time. Not only is the combo of this softare and a Rayming TN200 only $150 (the price of a cheap handheld GPS), but using the USB device as we did, we avioded the alternative; relying on the serial cables connector and adding a KeySpan and installing new drivers for the KeySpan and praying for smooth connectivity. We'd also have had to keep track of two more connectors whilst packing and repacking between motels and shoots. The Rayming device's USB drivers are even supposed to work with Panther, so we're all set when we upgrade. I give this a five star/two thumbs up war-whooping "that's what I'm talkin' about!" the author informed me that this app will soon feature soft-maps. this should allow us to use this for real-time marine navgation purposes as well. And this program is only $50? Bravo!
