Editors' Review

+

The volunteer developers of The GIMP have been working hard to develop a polished, user-friendly, and freely distributed image editor. Although the separated palette windows may disturb those users who are used to more traditional layouts, your comfort level should grow exponentially as you discover how pain-free the program is.

One of the most powerful general-purpose image editors around, the upgrades make the GNU Image Manipulation Program eminently comparable to Photoshop. Older features include channels, layers and masks, filters and effects, tabbed palettes, editable text tools, perspective clone, improved printing, and color operations such as levels. New improvements include GEGL integration for 32-bit color support, dynamic brushes, and more options for the free select tool. It even has regex-based pattern matching for power users.

The application provides professional tools that can stand against the big boys without the hefty price tag. Even the installation process has gotten simpler, with no need to download and install the GTX Runtime Environment separately. Extremely powerful and easy to work with, GIMP is ideal for both amateur and pro photographers, Web designers, or anyone who wants to create and edit professional-quality digital images on a budget.

"Non-intuitive and limited"

January 23, 2014  |  By dwall13

 |  Version: GIMP 2.8.10

Pros

Will show you how much you need photoshop.

Cons

Horrible. You can't even move objects without infuriation. Picture editing is a joke, both difficult and poor.

Summary

Just horrible

"Get the RIGHT GIMP VERSION for your OSX version"

December 02, 2013  |  By rinnie1

 |  Version: GIMP 2.8.10

Pros

If you are familiar with Adobe PhotoShop, JASC Paint Shop, or Corel PhotoPaint, the tools are pretty intuitive. You can do all of the basic and many of the advanced operations from those programs in GIMP. This is far and away a more powerful program than Seashore. Great capabilities for the price (FREE).

Cons

Crappy install process = lazy, half-baked installation programming (grumble)... see note in summary.

When EPS and CMYK are handled better, GIMP will earn the 5th star from me. ;-)

Summary

CNET is linking to the latest version of GIMP, which doesn't work with older versions of OSX. (CNET can't do "everything" LOL)
Go to http://gimp.lisanet.de/Website/Download.html to be sure you get the right version of GIMP for whatever version of OSX you're running.

NOTE: Once you download the correct DMG and double-click it, it just gets unpacked wherever you saved it. So if you didn't save the DMG to the Applications folder, you'll need to open the folder from wherever you saved it and move the app to the Applications folder.

I can download it okay.

Cons

After downloading gimp.dmg and attempting to install it I get a message telling me GIMP has quit
unexpectedly. I have an iMac that I purchased from an Apple Store in May of this year. It has OS X

"Version 2.8.0 is perfect on OSX 10.6"

October 24, 2013  |  By ewphillips123

 |  Version: GIMP 2.8.6p1

Pros

Has hints on the fly that Photoshop does not. Complete tools and effects for the desktop professional. Works well in all situations on the mac. Straight forward. Free when they could charge as much as Adobe does.

Cons

Little slow to startup because has to launch X11. So what. That means you have to have X11. So what, that is free.

Summary

GIMP is a real threat to Photoshop. I am running a MacBook Pro 2.6 Ghz with 4 Gig ram. I tried seashore (0.5.1) and the simple task of rotating an image from horizontal to vertical cut the image off. Ridiculous. I have used Photoshop for over 15 years on and off. Been paid to do numerous print ads. Gimp is a primetime program, at least version 2.8.0 is. Try GIMP for yourself and if it does not work on Mountain Lion, contact Gimp. I am sold on Gimp for my OSX 10.6. Gimp people are responsive to getting it right, so I believe that they will get it right if it really isn't. But try it for yourself before believing any other reviews. What do you have to lose, the money you paid for it? Thanks GIMP for giving me such a great program. PS Adobe disabled my full version Acrobat 5.0, I had purchased it about 8 years ago and Adobe recently forcing me to re-register before I could continue to use it. They disabled something that was resident in my Mac OSX operating system files that had to do with Acrobat 5.0. This happened after I got adobe reader and did an update. The gall of Adobe to do this is like the Gestapo and damaged business I was working on for a client. They cost me more than the value of the program I paid for.
Tried of Adobe. They have tried to charge monthly for their website creation program a year or two ago. I hope that flopped. Forget Seashore, it does very little. Try GIMP and see what it will do.

A concerned desktop publisher.

"Never worked, I'd give it 0 stars if I could."

September 12, 2013  |  By jmangino

 |  Version: GIMP 2.8.6p1

Pros

None- won't even load.

Cons

As soon as you try to open it you get a box that opens saying that 'gimp has quit unexpectedly'. Never even got to open the program.

Summary

I've used GIMP for years on my PC's, apparently it's useless on a mac though bc this is the second time I've tried it on an apple computer and both times it's failed to open.

"Gimp is Jip"

August 23, 2013  |  By atomicparticle

 |  Version: GIMP 2.8.6

Pros

wouldn't know, never worked

Cons

comes with malware. Even though I unchecked every possible add on this thing tries to install, I got it anyway and it seized my browser. Some junk called Conduit. and it STILL installed all this other software I unchecked it not to install. Took me days to remove Conduit and it sometimes keep popping up, finding it in prog files conduit folder.

Also the program downloaded but froze during install so never got around to trying it.

Summary

Get at your own risk

"Appears to work well with Mountain Lion, March 26/13"

March 26, 2013  |  By snth

 |  Version: GIMP 2.8.4

Pros

Used it for an hour. Ran pretty good. Gimp finally runs entirely on its own. Nothing else to download. Just start it up and it goes. Free. There is a big gap in the freebies between this app and low-end Seashore or whatever it's called, but Seashore is rather obtuse for a basic editor, so I'd rather put up with the complexity of GIMP, and work my simple way around the complexity for the basic needs.

Cons

Can't find many, except when I simply dragged an image file into a 'New' project, it crashed. Maybe you're not supposed to do that, or the image was too big for picture size or something, but I'm not a professional image worker. Once I opened the image from the file selector, it was fine

Summary

Good product, no extras needed anymore, Free.

"It's GIMP, but it's buggy! (Re: Mac version only)"

February 22, 2013  |  By ScottM74

 |  Version: GIMP 2.8.2

Pros

All the power of GIMP

Cons

Numerous bugs, some very minor, while others require GIMP restart

Summary

I love GIMP. Absolutely love it. Been using it for more than 10 years. So when they gave me a Mac for work, it was one of the first things I loaded. But this is nothing like the windows experience. Copy/Paste doesn't work right, weirdness with buttons not working until you hover over other buttons, flickering -- Once GIMP refused to exit the paths tool (which I hadn't even selected) until I restarted the program.

Yes, it's finally on the Mac, but it sure is living up to its name.
