Editors' Review

+

The volunteer developers of The GIMP have been working hard to develop a polished, user-friendly, and freely distributed image editor. Although the separated palette windows may disturb those users who are used to more traditional layouts, your comfort level should grow exponentially as you discover how pain-free the program is. The latest update is robust enough to have earned a full-point upgrade, although it's merely a jump from 2.2 to 2.4.

One of the most powerful general-purpose image editors around, the upgrades make the GNU Image Manipulation Program eminently comparable to Photoshop. Older features include channels, layers and masks, filters and effects, tabbed palettes, editable text tools, and color operations such as levels. New improvements include scalable brushes, revised selection tools, a new color menu, full-screen editing, a new crop tool, improved printing, red eye removal, perspective clone, lens distortion, and more. It even has regex-based pattern matching for power users.

The application provides professional tools that can stand against the big boys without the hefty price tag. Even the installation process has gotten simpler, with no need to download and install the GTX Runtime Environment separately. Extremely powerful and easy to work with, GIMP is ideal for both amateur and pro photographers, Web designers, or anyone who wants to create and edit professional-quality digital images on a budget.

"great program for freeware"

August 29, 2008  |  By miquie

 |  Version: GIMP 2.4.6

Pros

i like how thorough of a freeware program this is for photo-editing, especially when you don't need to spend $100.00 for Photoshop Elements for pretty much same quality for free.

Cons

one thing i don't like about the program is that everything opens in separate windows. it is something to get used to, but other than that - i like it.

"Pretty good, but..."

August 26, 2008  |  By ZZDaikun

 |  Version: GIMP 2.4.6

Pros

Great, powerful features that could rival Photoshop.

Cons

The interface is terrible (thank goodness for the GIMPshop hack) and it's slower than molasses.

Summary

Maybe if this program wasn't so darn slow (even GIMPshop falls victim to this problem), I'd actually use it more. Sorry, but I'm sticking with Paint.NET, because that at least doesn't wear on my patience.

"It?s a complete package with all the tools you?d expect"

August 25, 2008  |  By highfx

 |  Version: GIMP 2.4.6

Pros

Gimp is a full featured editing and image creation package. If you?ve used other software packages, it will look familiar but will take some time to learn. GIMP has the full suite of editing tools available in editing packages that aren?t free.

Cons

GIMP has separate tools, image and layers windows. It seems clumsy to have to repeatedly orient and size each window so that they?re all on top. There?s no search function in the help files. Applying filters was slower than expected.

Summary

Overall, GIMP is a well designed and effective image editing program. If you do extensive photo editing, this program may be for you. There's a bit of a learning curve but you can do just about anything with GIMP. You can read my complete review at: www.highfxphoto.net.

"Effective."

August 24, 2008  |  By littleme381

 |  Version: GIMP 2.4.6

Pros

It can render, it can vector, it can create wallpapers and many special effects Photoshop and Corel can't do. Even some that Paint.Net cannot accomplish. Very easy to use, and supports all image formats.

Cons

It can take awhile for GIMP to load up on it's start page if you have extra fonts downloaded, and occasionally freezes on start up. Nothing ctrl+alt+del can't fix, but it is still a pain.
and in the second version there isn't a Free-Form text option.

Summary

I've used GIMP since it first came out as an alternative to Photoshop (which I have never been good with) and I create some very nicely rendered pictures, and just recently started getting into vectoring...WITHOUT Illustrator.
Like I said before though, if you download extra fonts it takes longer to load, however it is worth the wait (which is never very long) and it rarely freezes. Recommended.

"One of my new favorites."

August 22, 2008  |  By Cornholio94

 |  Version: GIMP 2.4.6

Pros

Good interface (I wasn't a big fan of the one whole window with Photoshop) A nice array of powerful features.

Cons

Only thing that I'd wish for is a set of shape making tools (elipse, rect., ect.) So far I haven't seen a plug-in for it but hopefully since it's open source people will add it in.

"WOW, WHAT A LOAD!"

August 16, 2008  |  By RichardIII

 |  Version: GIMP 2.4.6

Pros

Enjoyable and powerful, so far, as far as I have gotten. I have not used GIMP long enough to be fair.

Cons

So far not as easy or as intuitive as Photoshop. But I have used Photoshop and other graphic programs longer.
