GEDitCOM specifications

What's new in version 3.1b2

  • A large number of changes to the "Basic HTML" export style for creating a web site. Many were suggested by users. It is now more complete and it should produced valid HTML tags (i.e., no unbalanced tags). There were also many changes to the style of web pages produced.
  • The "GEDCOM to GEDXML" export style has been improved to follow the draft GEDCOM 5.6 format. The output file was validated as an legal XML file.
  • GEDitCOM can now read and write UTF-8 encoded files. There is now also an option to save files using Windows characters (although this is not technically allowed for valid GEDCOM files, many PC programs need it).
  • The Pedigree Format was improved to handle marked records and allow attaching and viewing of multimedia links.
  • You now have complete control of case of names typed into the index window. Previously the case was forced to match the name that was found which was inconvenient when creating new individuals.
  • The "Privacy GEDCOM" export style will export a file that eliminates all information in "privacy" records except for name and family links. See GEDitCOM on-line help for how to indicate which records are "privacy" records.
  • The temporary "PassData" command in 3.1b1 was changed to "Use". In GEDitCOM 3.0.1 and earlier, the "Use" command had to be the only command in the template. Now it can be used anyplace (although it has some rules about what can come before it and after it).
  • A SetName command can load names with last name first. This was used to reformat the exported index in "Basic HTML" export style.
  • MacOS 10 and higher is still working out all the rules for dealing with file extensions. In one MacOS problem, it incorrectly assigned files to GEDitCOM (e.g. files with a bin extension) even though GEDitCOM only indicated it could open such files. That indication has been removed from GEDitCOM, but another MacOS problem, acknowledged by Apple, is that it may not correctly reassign icons even after GEDitCOM 3.1b1 is discarded and replaced by 3.1b2 or newer.
  • To help writing templates, "elseif" can also be "else if" and "endif" can also be "end if". It was a common typo I made which caused problems in some templates even though it looked correct
