"The best of the free video downloaders"

    November 23, 2012  |   By Taras_Bulba

Freemake provide no information about what protocols are supported, so I have tested FVD and found that like all the other free video downloaders it does not support the RTSP protocol required to download Quicktime videos. You are only likely to encounter Quicktime at the iTunes movie trailer site, so no big deal. I was surprised to discover that FVD can capture encrypted RTMP streams. This is something that you normally have pay for, or use a Linux command line application. RTMP and HTTP support means in theory that there should not be any flash or MP4 videos that you cannot download, although in practice FVD needs to be configured for certain sites. Very easy to use. Press a button in the IE toolbar and the program opens with the URL already entered. Then you are given a choice of source file formats and quality settings up to 1080p in some cases. No support for connecting via a proxy so recording from HULU can only be done with a VPN proxy.

Requires .NET 4.0. Lack of advanced options and simple interface - aimed at the non geek market.

This is the only video downloader that 98% of users will ever need. Excellent value considering the price.

    UPDATE 25/11/2012
I have done some more testing and I have found that FVD has a problem copying the audio stream from Youtube music videos. This is not so much due to shortcomings in FVD as to the fact that Youtube modify uploaded videos so that the audio content is truncated when it is copied. This was confirmed when I tried ffmpeg to demux the audio of a downloaded Youtube flv file and only the first 30 seconds of the audio was present. The same problem afflicts other video downloaders, so at the moment your best option to obtain mp3s from Youtube is the Free Youtube To MP3 Converter.

I forgot to add that connection is available via a HTTP proxy which can be configured in the File/Connection dialogue box.
