"Not Practical"
Version: FreeOCR 3.0
Pros
It does a good job at pulling text from a PDF--just as it is supposed to.
Cons
The text returned by this program is formatted basic with minimal formatting. Unrecognizable when placed next to the original document such as a brochure or catalog.
Summary
To me this program was not the answer I was hoping for. It returns the text very basic and loses any formatting from the original document which makes it useless for me. It's still a decent program but my uses for OCR require the output to retain original document format.

"Good, Not perfect, but useful"
Version: FreeOCR 3.0
Pros
Converted an image to text to text
Cons
Had to correct several errors
Summary
It's been years since I've used any OCR...but I never saw one that didn't make some errors. This is no exception...but it still beats typing the text or data into an ap. Easy to use. I'm pleased with it on balance

"You get what you didn't pay for"
Version: FreeOCR 3.0
Pros
Scan function brings in book pages quickly. Easy to rotate as needed, then select the area to OCR. Columns are not a problem. Works quickly, accuracy is good. Strips out line breaks.
Cons
Something that works this well for free can hardly be said to have "cons." My wish list would include the ability to paste screen shots from clipboard, paragraph recognition, and the ability to process the whole pdf file, not just one page at a time.
Summary
Easy to use. 90% of the time I don't need more than this offers. Straightforward interface, no learning curve. Ah, my dear one, at last I have found thee.

"Worked right after the download and installation"
Version: FreeOCR 3.0
Pros
Was easy to use and pretty intuitive
Cons
I would of liked more documentation.
Summary
I'd recommend it to anyone.

Pros
It does what its supposed to.
Cons
Does not recognize carriage returns or line breaks.

"Free and does the job"
Version: FreeOCR 3.0
Pros
Easy and quick to use. Nice user interface.
Cons
Didn't convert text and digits perfectly - converted some numbers to '?' and 'Sensor' to 'Sens0r' on a BMP file I tried. However, I don't expect perfection with free software.
Summary
Quick and easy to install - worth giving a go.

"Excellent Small Program"
Version: FreeOCR 3.0
Pros
I've used the full versions of all 3 of the top OCR; Readiris Pro, Abbyy Finereader, OmniPage. These all had flaws when it came to scanning documents.
Cons
None, did everything I wanted.
Summary
I've used the full versions of all 3 of the top OCR; Readiris Pro, Abbyy Finereader, OmniPage. These all had flaws when it came to scanning documents, they all had features that state this and that, but the end results were poor to say the least.

"First choice to read text from old typed documents."
Version: FreeOCR 3.0
Pros
Reads old typed documents better than any free OCR I've tested. I still have to clean up the raw OCR output with my word processor, especially using the "find and replace" function, but it's much better than retyping the document.
Cons
No formatting. One page at a time processing. You have to individually cut and paste column text, artwork.
Summary
FreeOCR does not perform as well from image files (tif, jpeg, etc.) as it does by scanning directly into the application. Use the built in scan button in FreeOCR; do not scan to file with printer or MS software. After scanning and before clicking OCR button, ?crop image to selected area? using the rectangle icon on left frame.
