"Malware - Stay away"
Version: FreeOCR 4.2
Pros
The program actually worked pretty well for me. It read my PDFs and got me the text I needed. It was very simple
Cons
Destroyed my computer. It installs extensions in all browsers on your computer. These change your search engine, what you see on new tabs, and in my firefox it also installed advertisements, so that any page on the internet it will insert ads on the page. Different browsers it installs different things. And who knows what other spyware or malware comes too. I am very unhappy.
Summary
It gets the job done, but at the price of your computer. I highly regret downloading this.

"DO NOT DOWNLOAD!"
Version: FreeOCR 4.2
Pros
NONE, complete waste of time!
Cons
It's full of UNWANTED programs. Once, installed it never worked for me, NOT ONCE. Only crashed. I am running Win 7 on a QuadCore w/ 6GB of RAM. Worst CNet download experience, bar none!!!

"Better than the other piece of junk but still not good"
Version: FreeOCR 4.2
Pros
Didn't install any crapware that I could see.
Cons
even though I used the direct download link it still downloaded a stub installer and then the stub pulled down the other 10MB.
Interface was simple and easy.
It did OCR the .bmp I was working with but only about 60% accurately. Capital Ohs came out zeros, ones came out els, and there were extra spaces in the server names from the image.Summary
Would take quite a bit of cleanup to make the OCRed text worth anything. I think I'll go find the old copy of ABBY that came with one of my now defunc scanners.

"Good features for free; downloads other software"
Version: FreeOCR 4.2
Pros
Great OCR for free - does basic jobs
Useful for scanning receipts etc.
Exports to Word, RTF, clipboard
Fast and easy to useCons
Crapware and possibly spyware installed also

"Unable to perform OCR on spreadsheet graphic"
Version: FreeOCR 4.2
Pros
It saved me time in one column.
Cons
It put all of a spreadsheet in one column. It did keep the columns separate. It proved question marks instead of dollar signs. It tries to load toolbars and other stuff. Go through the install process slowly to uncheck the boxes and note that when you uncheck one box, that causes it to check another box. This developer is devious. Some stuff can't be unchecked so you'll have to uninstall stuff in your browser after you load it.
Summary
The software is not mature yet. They have too many toolbars and ad pages. Don't recommend it.

"Completely useless"
Version: FreeOCR 4.2
Pros
None, this is junk.
Cons
I took a clean picture of 1/4 of a 8.5x11 page with a 12mp camera in good lighting, ran it through this software, and got complete gibberish over half a dozen runs.
It also tried to trick me into installing two tools/browser addons. Such shady practices, I wouldn't even buy from this company even if their software worked.Summary
Waste of time to download, install, and uninstall.
-
"Just spyware"
Version: FreeOCR 4.2
Pros
SpyBot stops it from installing completely but you will need to reinstall spybot because it causes it to crash on launch.
Cons
Sypware toolbars and porn spam
Summary
CNET was a place that was safe to use but those days are long passed.

"Works OK,but CNET download spams with 7 crappy programs"
Version: FreeOCR 4.2
Pros
Works OK, used it from image in pdf to word.
* Works in various languages, including dutch (listed under nld)
* Does not recognize all the characters, provides no formatting, nor reproduces fonts or sizes. But gets a reasonable job done for just text, and with some manual corrections (auto spelling corrections and find/replace in Word) a presentable text was available.Cons
The download comes with crappy applications or add ons such as toolbars, search tools and so on. These apps are installed without my consent, unnoticed and aggressively take over my browser and some other tools.
7 things i needed to uninstall, and that took me way longer than installing the actual OCR tool.
CNET: DON'T pull these stunts, it totally spoils your quality and I will think twice about downloading from your site again!Summary
OK tool if you really need an OCR tool, but you have to watch, manage and repair the download and installation.
-
"Not worth the money"
Version: FreeOCR 4.2
Pros
Does recognise some letters
Cons
OCR recognition efficiency very poor, with the end result full or errors and no formatting.
Summary
Don't bother to download and install.
-

Cons

Summary
