FreeFixer is a capable tool that scans your computer for potential threats such as viruses and malware. It identifies a wide range of system processes and functions and gives you the power to delete any you choose. But the developers take great pains to remind users that this freeware can't tell good files from bad ones and will delete critical system files if you tell it to. They recommend using it with great care, and so do we. Don't use it if you don't know what it's going to do. Most users won't need it unless their systems are already infected. In that case, FreeFixer can definitely find and remove most unwanted files, drivers, services, and processes.
FreeFixer's plain interface opens with a welcome message on the Scanner tab, which includes a link to the Web-based user's manual. A Settings tab includes the option to show MD5 and SHA256 keys for files. The Tools tab only offers two tools, but they're good ones: a secure file-deletion utility named File Nuker and a Start System File Checker control, which might require your Windows installation disk. The File Checker is an especially useful native Windows utility that can reset or reinstall corrupted or changed settings from the source files.
We started the scan, which reported a wide range of items: processes, services, application modules, recently created or modified files, drivers, browser helper objects, toolbars, and much more. We could click More Info on any item we needed to, though FreeFixer's scan report does a good job of explaining what it finds. Once again, the program recommended extreme care about deleting anything. We carefully reviewed each item but saw no threats, which was exactly what we'd expected. And that's important to note: If you have decent antivirus and malware protection, even the basic Windows-provided tools, you probably won't find anything amiss. If you know your system is infected, FreeFixer can help you track down and delete the culprits. It's highly recommended for skilled users, when used with care.
FreeFixer is a general purpose removal tool which will help you to delete potentially unwanted software, such as adware, spyware, Trojans, viruses and worms. FreeFixer works by scanning a large number of locations where unwanted software has a known record of appearing or leaving traces. FreeFixer does not know what is good or bad so the scan result will contain both files and settings that you want to keep and perhaps some that you want to remove.
What's new in this version:
Version 1.03 has fixed bug where FreeFixer closed itself when a background scan had completed and the user clicked the Donate, Tools or Settings tab.
