File management isn't always an easy task, especially when you run the risk of accidentally overwriting or deleting important information. If you're trying to keep the contents of your USB drive matched up with a folder on your computer or otherwise need to synchronize files, try FreeFileSync. This easy-to-use program makes file synchronization a breeze, even for novices.

FreeFileSync's interface is attractive and intuitive. Large buttons with tool tips guide users through each step of the process. Simply browse to the two folders you want to compare, click the Compare button, and FreeFileSync will tell you exactly how the folder contents differ. Files can be compared either by content or by size and date. Users can then sync the folders automatically or just move selected files manually between the folders. Syncing can update changes in both folders, create a mirror backup of one folder, or move all updated or changed files to one folder. Users can also create their own synchronization rules. Filters help users control which files are overwritten, ensuring that nothing important is lost. Everything about FreeFileSync is easy to use, but the program still comes with a detailed Help file that contains a lot of information about its more-advanced features. Overall, we were quite impressed with FreeFileSync; it's versatile, commonsense, and a great choice for anyone with file syncing needs. Inexperienced users will be pleased with its intuitiveness, while more experienced users will benefit from its array of configurable options, including symbolic link handling, and FTP capabilities.

"Very Bad Experience with Bundled Malware"

September 20, 2013  |  By TexasGreen

 |  Version: FreeFileSync 5.21

Pros

FreeFileSync is a fine program

Cons

Its reputation suffers greatly from its association with bundled malware. I downloaded an earlier version From CNet and it worked very well . . a useful and well-designed product. Some time later, while using the product, I received a message on the screen stating that an updated version was available for downloading. I accepted, and in addition to FreeFileSync, I found that it had installed the Snapdo malware and the InfoAtom malware. These were hardly unobtrusive and very challenging to eliminate completely for someone possessing modest computer skills. I spent hours researching this. It is not simply a matter of running "Uninstall." I eventually had to hire someone to help. So much for the "Free" in FreeFileSync.

Summary

Why would the creators of such a fine product damage their reputation by inflicting this kind of misery on potential users? I am someone who does pay or send in a contribution when software does what it says it will do, and I find myself using it regularly. That question aside, is there anyway to ENSURE that the current version of the software does not come with this kind of hidden crap? Based upon other reviews, it seems that this product now comes bundled with different, but no less harmful, malware. Yes, I know that I should carefully review the download screen to make sure that I am not accepting something I do not want, but I am not sure that is foolproof. And I go back to my original question: Why would the makers of this software try to trick their target audience? How many pennies per person do they make by doing this?

"Installs with Conduit Malware!!!"

September 20, 2013  |  By rgasub

 |  Version: FreeFileSync 5.21

Pros

freefilesync looks to be useful.

Cons

Wasted a couple of hours removing Conduit. Reason I downloaded from CNET was the impression I had that CNET policies posts here so that users can download safely, but I guess that's not true anymore. If you run into the same problem, here's a website that really helped me with the cleanup: http://malwaretips.com/blogs/conduit-search-removal/

Pros

Excellent program. Can do it all, and accurate.

Cons

Bloatware option available on install. Not required to install bloatware for program download, unless of course, you can't read.

Summary

Review home page for extensive list of features. Too many good features to list.

"BUNDLED WITH MALWARE!"

September 06, 2013  |  By kmx2000

 |  Version: FreeFileSync 5.21

Pros

FreeFileSync itself is a great program. A good alternative to Microsoft SyncToy which no longer works for many users.

Cons

Unfortunately, it comes bundled with the Conduit/KeyBar malware suite that is a pain to remove. BEWARE.
