"If you do not want PC problems and time wasteKEEP AWAY!"

    November 17, 2014  |   By slepowron1959

    Version: Free Studio 6.4.0.1111

    Pros

The IDEA is great: Many necessary tools all in one place, BUT ... !

    Cons

I downloaded and installed the software only to find that after reboot I kept receiving an Interactive Services message and icon on my tool bar. This kept showing and if I enterd the message it blanked my desktop and kept showing the installation page. I tried everything possible: Uninstalling the software, \cleaning registry, disabling Interactive Services. Nothing helped, I could not get rid of this. Finally I was able to get in contact with the publisher and they suggested remote session with access to my PC. LOVELY! Of course, this was not easy, since the computer is at my home, so I had to take extended lunch breaks at home, since you have to sit at your computer for the duration (rebooting, etc.). After 3 sessions and approximately 6 hours the problem was solved. Well, al least THEY learned something.

    Summary

I wasted time because of this software. The publisher benefited, since they found a bug which possibly will not annoy others. They also promised me a free license key for the trouble I had, but after the whole thing wass over they simply did not send it to me and when I sarcastically mentioned this, they sent me a "You are welcome (for the key)" message!!! I have the emails. Anyway, I unistalled the software, there are aother better and more universal solutions (more formats, etc.). Just thought I'd let you know about this.

    "MALWARE AND BLOATWARE"

    October 23, 2014  |   By mlepore

    Version: Free Studio 6.4.0.1016

    Pros

Tools that I used often, very usefull

    Cons

    Malware makes this program UNUSABLE!

    Summary

I had been using this program for years and even PAID for the full version without ADS... guess what? Even though I declined bloatware during installation, and had a key for the full version, the developers thought it would be nice to install various programs which hack your computer, track cookies, force ad pop ups etc.

A forced uninstall using REVO uninstaller... which are usually very successful... resulted in REVO blowing away several of my save files, program files which became associated with DVDVideosoft, because they track your files and all your information!

Absolutely FURIOUS as the program brought my i7 computer to a halt and forced me to do a complete re-install of my computer because the bloatware was uninstallable.

These developers and CNET should be absolutely ASHAMED of themselves for calling this "bloatware free". WHAT A JOKE! THANKS!

"I've been using this for years"

    October 15, 2014  |   By XNam360

    Version: Free Studio 6.3.10.923

    Pros

    - Lots of great tools that I've been using for years. Funny thing is, sometimes I don't even realize what I already have with Free Studio and then waste time looking for other software to perform certain tasks, only to realize that Free Studio already lets me do what I wanted to do and do it better than the other software I've been wasting time trying out.

    - You are free to download each tool individually, if you don't want the entire Free Studio package.

    - Updates frequently. Sure, you may sometimes be annoyed at having to update so often when you open this program, but really that's a good thing, because it shows that DVDVideoSoft is constantly keeping this up to date.

    - DVDVideoSoft's customer support forum site will actually help you. I've posted some troubleshooting questions there a few times and always got quick responses.

    Cons

    - Alongside the useful tools included with Free Studio, there are, of course, a few that I never bother with, because there are better software out there.

For example, I'm not sure what the point of the YouTube and Facebook uploaders are, since you can already do that without help of any tool. The Free Screen Recorder works, but does not capture any sound - no point in having it when I already have Open Broadcasting Software. Similarly, I have no reason to touch the audio editing tool, because I use Audacity. So, it's not that the Free Studio tools are bad, there are just better options out there sometimes.

    Summary

This package features a bunch of great tools I use all the time (along with some that I never bother with). I download them all at once for convenience, but you're free to download them individually if you don't want to clutter your drive with the tools you know you won't need.

Here are some of my favorite tools in Free Studio:

The highlight of this package are the downloaders: I use the YouTube to mp3 Converter and YouTube downloader all the time. Downloading whole playlists or pasting a whole bunch of video links into the window and then letting them all download to completion is easy and fast.

The Free mp4 Video Converter can handle a whole lot more formats than just mp4, converting both from and to different video formats, so I'm not sure why it's called such. I think they may be selling themselves short.

Free Video to mp3 is useful when there are sounds I want to capture from videos. Pretty self explanatory.

The Free Video Editor & Video Flip/Rotate tools are surprisingly useful. To be clear, these are not full fledged video editors. But the video editor can do simple tasks such as cutting out segments from videos very easily and best of all, it does not re-encode the entire video, so it's very fast and doesn't affect the parts you do not edit.

The Video to JPG Converter is another surprisingly useful tool. This is one of those situations where I wasted time trying to figure out how to do, how to convert a video file into a bunch of image files, and wasted plenty time searching around, trying out other software, only to realize that I already had a good tool that does that all along, included in Free Studio.

    Updated on Oct 22, 2014

I must take back what I said about having no use for the Free Screen Recorder. I've found that it can actually be useful. Although its video capture feature indeed does not work so well because it does not record any sound, the screen image capture feature works very well, better than the previous software I'd been using for doing that.

    Used to work well

    Cons

The stream of popups trying to install dubious software on your PC make it unusable

    "Norton Reported High Threat virus"

    September 18, 2014  |   By JohnSC100

    Version: Free Studio 6.3.9.906

    Pros

It works GREAT, but not worth getting infected with viruses and malware.

    Cons

Norton reported MH690.A High Threat virus and tons of tracking cookies. Installed unwanted programs even though I declined ALL of the requests at install time.

    Summary

I have used this package for several years and love it. When I rebuilt my computer I installed the latest version and Norton 2014 360 quarantined Freevideoeditor.exe. Norton also removed a ton of tracking cookies. During installation I declined all the requests for other programs, but after the installation (of the programs not quarantined) I checked the un-install programs list and found 2 advertising programs that were installed at the same time as the FreeStudio. I would be happy to by $35 or $40 for this suite if it was clean, but nothing is worth putting my computer at this much risk. On their web site they ask for people to send them evidence of the malware. The cynic in me believes that they want examples so they can re-write the viruses to defeat the virus protection. I really love these programs and now have to find a substitute. CNET really needs to check this out. I used to trust the programs I downloaded from CNET.

    "Contains Malware"

    August 26, 2014  |   By Fozziedog1

    Version: Free Studio 6.3.8.820

    Pros

    None for this upgrade

    Cons

This upgrade contains a lot of malware

    Summary

CNET needs to remove it and notify the publisher. It should have been tested before posting it.

    "Will hack all your browsers"

    July 28, 2014  |   By jcece_pa

    Version: Free Studio 6.3.6.716

    Pros

None, This will hack your browsers.

    Cons

This app will hack your browsers and good luck getting rig of it. Deleting the program which installed in addition to the youtube downloader did NOT remove Stovi as my default search engine. AND it has disabled Google. How I will change this I have yet to figure out. Thankfully it's worse on IE, and Firefox is working ok for now. That's why I downloaded through IE - I don't really use the browser anymore anyway.

    Shame on CNET for recommending.

    "No longer true"

    April 27, 2014  |   By Laylong

    Version: Free Studio 6.2.4.1230

    Pros

If you can find an old enough version and not update it, you might be safe.

    Cons

    Ad bloated
Not as straight forward as it used to be
Spawns pop ups and suspicious download prompts
Freezes and crashes if you close said pop ups

    Summary

About a year or so ago when dirpy.com first got taken down, this managed to be the best thing to replace it. Since then every update that has been put out for this software has either obfuscated the interface, added ads, or worse. The program in it's current version is no longer safe or even usable.
