"Beware of the extra junk it will download"
Version: Free Sound Recorder 9.4.1
Pros
It records sound
Cons
Didn't work any better than the sound recorder that came with laptop & even after NOT accepting the 2 extra toolbars & a search engine it still downloaded and took 30 minutes to get rid of it all. Very annoying!!!
Summary
Not worth the hassle

"Great recorder when it works."
Version: Free Sound Recorder 9.4.1
Pros
Simple program, easy to work with
Good recording volume and output levels
Puts files into chosen location with consecutive numbering and auto namingCons
Too noisy, filtering options are a bit "hidden"
Noise filters aren't as good as other free recorders
Program won't work for more than a week or two before errors show upSummary
I've installed and reinstalled this program about five times now and it works great but after not using it for sometime, I come back and gives be me this error when loading from the start menu; "Error opening audio device for input. Bad device ID." i don't change anything on my computer, it just works, and then, it doesn't. Sometimes it'll still load by running the .exe file from the programs folder but never from the start menu. And honestly it's too much trouble to go to for just a simple quick recording which is why I downloaded it in the first place. I would say it's because it has issues working with Windows 7 but I've tried it on computers with Vista and XP only to get the same error, all with different devices that work fine on all my other programs.
If it works with others' systems I'd say it's a decent recorder but I have found better free recording programs. For me it gets a 2.5 for all the hassle. -
"perfectly simple to use"
Version: Free Sound Recorder 9.4.1
Pros
it has a user-friendly interface that all buttons and controls can be easily found.
Cons
This is a simple enough sound recorder that you can start recording just by one-click

For those who have had problems with a toolbar being installed, here is what you are missing. It isn't just a matter of deselecting checkboxes, you have to fully read each dialog that appears during the installation. There is one where there are Decline, I Accept, and Cancel buttons. If you click I Accept, you are *agreeing* to install the Free Sound Recorder Toolbar. This has nothing to do with the checkboxes. Instead, click the Decline button. This is to prevent the toolbar from being installed while still continuing to install the sound recorder. Again, carefully read each dialog and don't just gloss over them like most of us do. ;-) I had no problems with the installation and all that installed is the recorder.... no toolbars or any other thing.
I have only used the basic recorder so far, and it is so easy if you have any experience at all with a recorder. I have not used the editor yet, but it looks like any other editor and I expect it to be easy as well. What I really love about this recorder is the scheduler. I can schedule it to record Internet broadcasts automatically. Awesome!

"Works fine BUT..."
Version: Free Sound Recorder 9.4.1
Pros
Works fine as an audio recorder (microphone) and streaming audio recorder. You need to change the source to "Wave Out Mix" to record streaming audio with decent volume.
Cons
BEWARE! This program will install a Sound Recorder toolbar and Radio Recorder (something) EVEN if you ask the program NOT to install them during installation. Windows "Remove Programs" doesn't really remove them from your PC, you have to do it via your browser(s) extension menu. They installed on a couple of my browser by default. It took me about half an hour to get rid off them. SHAME ON YOU DEVELOPER! CNET should mention it in the review!

"Terrible software"
Version: Free Sound Recorder 9.4.1
Pros
it does record the sound coming out the creative sound card.
Cons
I installed this in a windows xp machine and not the visual vu meters stutters (it is no consistence with the dynamic range of the input audio) but it also knocked out the HD sound output from My Nvidia graphics card. uninstalled/installed graphics card thinking it was corrupt but nothing got fix, so i though about the recent installation of this software and in effect, this was the problem. Uninstalled both the free sound recorder and the graphics card. installed back the graphics card and the HD sound is back to normal.
Summary
this software needs to be more tweaked in order to work correctly
Sorry I meant to write: and the visual vu meters...
