Version: Free FLV Converter 5.81
"An almost perfect FLV converter..."
Pros: Converts very fast and has a lot of options for tweaking video output (video formats, setting bit rates, using various CODEC's and like that).
Cons: The installer WILL install a potentially harmful toolbar and maybe even an unwanted BHO (which might hijack your homepage). You MUST pay CLOSE attention when installing if you don't want these things! Also, no alternate VPU processing - CPU Only!
Summary: There seems to be a newer version available and just why CNet (currently) doesn't have it is not known. Nevertheless, when you install this program it will find updates via the Internet and you will be presented with the option to download it which is what I did (I am using version 6.xx). You can turn this update feature off if you want to, but either way either version seems to be the exact same thing where any newer version might only include bug fixes.
Overall, this is a great video converter but is still somewhat limited with the input type of video format that it can use (as if the title didn't tell you). For example, if you want to convert FROM an MP4 to a FLV you can't! However you can take a FLV and make an MP4, AVI, WMV or even a better tweaked out FLV. And just why you would want to make an FLV from an FLV would at first seem to be somewhat redundant, until you consider possible formatting issues - which you can perform here.
In my case, I will be using this to convert my FLV's to something more usable since it is a great first step towards that direction. And once those pesky FLV videos are in AVI or even WMV format then I will be able to edit them! Still, I wish there were some way to convert the other way too since there just doesn't seem to be a way to take a WMV, AVI or something else and convert TO an FLV file (as you might assume).
Lastly, it's worth pointing out that if all you want to do is simply watch your FLV videos (and only on your Windows box) that you DON'T need this nor any kind of video converter. However, you will need a better video "player" since I'm sure you may have noticed that Windows Media Player just doesn't cut it (even in the current beta release with Windows 7 build 7000). Therefore, I suggest KMPlayer, VLC or even GOM (in that order) if that's you.
