"Best such freeware utility I found after trying many"

    September 26, 2014  |   By kjbaumga

    Version: Free Countdown Timer 3.1

    Pros

For free, this is the best countdown timer that I found. It not only can play any sound you like, but can execute any file, such as launching a JPG image or notepad document. Other features are listed above: unlimited timers, and you can configure each timer individually, such as the volume of the sound.

    Cons

Limitations are that the timer text is about one short paragraph. But if you need longer text, just put it in a text file or image file and have FCT launch it. A "con" is that the reminder windows in the free version are very basic. The pay version (Hot Alarm Clock) I believe has more options. An alternative program that is more aesthetically pleasing is "TimeLeft", which seems very good but has very limited options in the trial version.

Another weakness is that your options are to run timers every set number of minutes or hours, or to run them daily, weekly, monthly and so on. But what if you want a timer to run say, three times a day, or M/W/F ? Then you need to create three timers. This won't work for the needs of some people.

    Summary

I've found it very useful. It's helpful for practical reminders, but also for self-help purposes, such as reminding yourself of mantras, goals, inspiring quotes, automatically opening to-do lists, and so on.

Knowing some programming, I combined it with programs I wrote AutoIt, a program that lets you use macros to automate stuff in Windows, which extends the abilities of this program. For example, I can use AutoIt to set a reminder to run Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, which is a con I mentioned.

    "Great little timer!"

    Version: Free Countdown Timer 3.1

    Pros

    Does everything it offers.
    No-fuss Windows installation

    Cons

Number of alarm repeats - none, one or infinite. Would be nice to have more than one but less than "come back and turn me off or I will drive you insane"
