Despite its simplicity, this encryption utility offers solid features and works quite well. Folder Crypt integrates easily with the Windows shell, letting you encrypt files and folders by right-clicking them in Windows Explorer.

Its own interface consists of a few buttons and a file-display area, which easily lets you get to the program's various functions. Folder Crypt comes with a password generator and lets you apply compression to your encrypted archives. The program can evaluate the strength of your passwords. There is no e-mail integration, however, and it doesn't create executables that can be opened with a password, so it's not appropriate for sharing secret files among colleagues.

It comes with multiple encryption algorithms, from 64-bit DES all the way to 2,048-bit ARC4. We like how the program automatically deletes source files. Another nice touch is the folder shredder, which provides five methods for making the deleted files unrecoverable (one even meets Department of Defense specs).

In our tests, the program encrypted small sets of files very quickly, but, as you might expect, it can take a rather hefty amount of RAM when securing large folders. Overall, Folder Crypt is easy to use, comes with some nice features, and will work well for most users who have something to hide.

Publisher's description

From LittleLite Software :

With Folder Crypt you can password protect your Windows folders using low level encoding and standard algorithms, such as DES and Rijndael. The program performs a true bit per bit encryption of your data. All you have to do is to supply a password or passphrase. The encryption process is not reversible (you can decrypt the folder only if you know the correct passphrase). User must enter the password even to list the files in the encrypted folder.
