Flash adds multimedia effects to Web sites, but not everyone wants that. Some people find Flash animations annoying or distracting, or they're concerned about privacy and security. And for some, it's all of the above. Developers have responded with a variety of tools designed to block all or some Flash animations from loading. We took a look at Flashblock, a free Flash blocker for Firefox and other Mozilla browsers as well as related browsers such as Netscape. It blocks Flash, Shockwave, and Authorware in both Macromedia and Adobe versions.

After we installed Flashblock and restarted Firefox, the first thing we noticed was the "F" logo placeholder instead of blocked content in our animated weather gadget. Browsing to several other major Web sites that use Flash technology confirmed that Flashblocker was preventing Flash content from loading. Moving the cursor into the blocked content's placeholder frame changed the F logo to a Play button. When we clicked it, the blocked content played normally. Flashblocker didn't block non-Flash content like images and other forms of animation, nor did it keep pages from loading quickly and completely (except for blocked content). We accessed Flashblocker's tabbed options via Firefox's add-ons manager. These options are minimal, chiefly consisting of a check box to also block Microsoft's Silverlight and a whitelist for adding sites allowed to run Flash.

Even if you've got lots of bandwidth and PC power, there are Web sites so choked with animations that they never seem to stop loading. Try throwing Flashblock at them. It proved an effective tool for blocking animated ads and other Flash-powered nuisances, yet we could view any blocked content we wished just as easily as playing a video.

"Never leave home without it."

January 19, 2012  |  By jandsm5321

 |  Version: Flashblock 1.5.15.1

Pros

Easy to use, great features, and is very effective.

Cons

Some websites (like online survey websites) don't let you use the right click in your browser so you can't permanently enable flash for those websites.

Don't see a way to manually add sites to the allow list either.

Summary

I hate unnecessary flash adds and such loading while I'm using the internet, and I hate pornographic garbage that is frequently used in ads online. I use Flashblock to get rid of the flash, then use Firefox's built in image block feature to get rid of the rest that I don't want to see.

"Excellent!"

September 18, 2008  |  By morgaine101

 |  Version: Flashblock 1.5.4.1

Pros

I absolutely LOVE this Firefox extension. I use dial-up and embedded flash items would severely slow my download times. Now I can decide when I want to see the flash item or not. Thanks Lorenzo Colitti and Philip Chee.

Cons

I have no cons whatsoever to discuss about this product.

"Very good!"

January 22, 2008  |  By JoyceNgo

 |  Version: Flashblock 1.5.4.1

Pros

FlashBlock is one of the first extensions I got ever since I downloaded Firefox. This tool helps you block unwanted or wanted flash movies and objects and has a play button asking if you would want to play the flash movie or not. I find this very useful because I hate advertisements with flashy and annoying animations. This add-on saves you the annoyance, and is very useful.

Cons

Although it blocks ads, on certain websites or objects (myspace music player), after clicking the play button, it would just block the entire flash object instead of playing it. Only flaw so far..

"a way to block those anoying flash Ads"

February 05, 2007  |  By manmur

 |  Version: Flashblock 1.5.1

Pros

Finally a way to block all of the flash ads or any other type of flash you do not want to be playing on your PC. All of the flash being blocked form the site are replaced with place holders with a "play" button so you are able to see the flash if you want to see it.

"Fantastic"

October 19, 2006  |  By BlitzkriegBullet

 |  Version: Flashblock 1.5.1

Pros

One word. Fantastic! It blocks those annoying color changing ads all over myspace and stops peoples profiles that have around 1o videos on their pages. It stops the ads with the smileys that make faces and noises and buzzing bug ones as well on photobucket.com. It also helps websites load faster.

"Block unwanted flash, see wanted flash."

September 30, 2006  |  By Brent_Cox

 |  Version: Flashblock 1.5.1

Pros

Automatically blocks all flash ads and replaces them with a Flashblock icon. To see the flash, just click the icon. It's very simple and solves the huge problem of unwanted flash ads. This is today's equivalent of a pop-up blocker. Take back your internet viewing and never have to see an obnoxious flash ad again.

Cons

None.

Effective way of choosing what flash movies to play, also saves brandwidth.

Cons

"Wow"

April 12, 2006  |  By SonicAdvDX

 |  Version: Flashblock 1.5.1

Pros

Just, wow. This is an amazing extension. It speeds up the loading time of countless sites (even Download.com) and replaces all Flash applets with a nice little Macromedia "f", and it even keeps the original proportions of the applet, so the page isn't distorted at all. A simple click and it loads just as fast as it normally would, and in the exact same way. (Plus, it's another great way to cripple those annoying talking ads.)

Cons

None. Not a performance hit in sight. (But, of course, how many resources does it take to not load something?)
