Capturing Flash files is extremely easy, thanks to this handy download manager. Unfortunately, in order to play any of the files, you'll have to install additional programs.

FlashCatch installs a drop-down menu icon on your Internet Explorer toolbar. Simply pay a visit to your favorite video-sharing site, navigate to a video page, and the program grabs the file for download. Once we selected the video file from the drop-down menu, it was instantly saved to our location of choice. However, in order to play the program, you have to install either the publisher's video converter to convert the file to a MPEG or AVI file, or install the player. Luckily, both of these other programs are free. Options for the program include setting specific file sizes for the program to ignore, displaying recent files, and animating the icon when a Flash file is recognized. Help for the program is available as an FAQ on the publisher's Web site.

If you're not too keen on downloading an extra program, then you might want to look for a download manager that allows you to play the video files using its own built-in capabilities or your own default player. But if you don't mind the extra installations, this easy-to-use download manager is suitable for all user levels.

"Maybe a good app, but absolutely NOT FREE"

January 13, 2010  |  By strikerboy_sua

 |  Version: FlashCatch 1.0.3

Pros

It's not free. Maybe this is a good program, but you have to buy it first.

Cons

I haven't downloaded anything. It requires you to buy the product if you want to download flash movies exceeding 10 mb. It's useless, considering that most flash movies right now are over and above 10 mb.

Summary

Maybe a good app, but you have to buy it first. So sad that it's misleading, trying to make us believe that its free but in reality its not.

"Not FREE, miscategorized"

December 20, 2009  |  By knightmanic

 |  Version: FlashCatch 1.0.3

Pros

Have no idea if it works because it requires to pay to download any serious video.

Cons

CNET needs to crack down on vendors like this that misrepresent products as free. This is far from free.

Summary

NOT FREE

"This product is not worth a penny,no wonder its free"

December 17, 2009  |  By stinger63347

 |  Version: FlashCatch 1.0.3

Pros

None I can find, it don't work

Cons

won't catch anything i have viewed yet. Always wants me to buy the program even though it can't catch anything

Summary

Worthless

Updated on Feb 3, 2010

Does not work on Firefox. waste of money, unless you use the browser they tell you too. Free Version only copies really small clips. Pay $20 if you want to capture anything else. But since it don't work with my browser of choice its worthless

"Useful, but Extremely SLOW!!!"

November 21, 2009  |  By mp_user

 |  Version: FlashCatch 1.0.3

Pros

Easy to use interface, relatively cheap

Cons

Extremely slow

Summary

I played with trial version and it seemed worth to spend $20 to be able to download my favorite videos from web. However, I hoped I had contained my impulse! The utility seems to be good (and possibly the only one in market so far) ... but it is really really slow! I have high-speed cable modem and this thing download video files at a speed of less than 100kb/s !!!!!!!!!!!! So yeah, you may be able to download flv files ... but be ready to wait for a looooong time!

"This downloader fits my needs perfectly!"

November 03, 2009  |  By nmweatherman

 |  Version: FlashCatch 1.0.3

Pros

Sweet and simple and free

Cons

Can't think of any

Summary

I recently decided to download my favorite music videos from YouTube and most if not all are in the .flv configuration. Since my Media Player 11 won't play .flvs, I needed a downloader and a .flv player for my collection. I found the perfect, simple .flv player with Applian FLV Player. I spent some two days trying different software and was about to give up when I came across FlashCatch at cnet.

The other .flv downloaders I tried gave me headaches and problems and made me utter words I haven't used since I was in the Navy. They set off all kinds of alarms in my firewall and AV and tried to take over my IE8 and desktop. They installed complete extra toolbars and search engines I had elected to opt-out from. Their EULAs promised they would be using my IP address...and that's when I almost gave up. Well...today I tried FlashCatch from cnet and BINGO! I finally found what I needed...something with a small footprint, something that was really easy to configure, and something that didn't try to take over my IE8 or desktop, or install adware and spyware.

FlashCatch installed one unobtrusive icon on my IE8 toolbars and was extremely simple to configure. When I go to YouTube, I start a music video I like and click on FlashCatch's icon...click on the URL it detects, and tell it where to download the music video file (that window comes up like any download window, you know, SAVE or RUN) and you tell it where to save the file and that's that! It's done!

I have had an on-going buffering problem, the little revolving white circle? C'mon now, I know you've seen it too...anyway, when FlashCatch begins the download you can walk away, don't listen to the download. The buffering if it comes is ignored and FlashCatch solves that problem because it downloads a complete, intact, continuous music video.

That's all I was looking for. I'm a K.I.S.S. person (Keep It Simple, Stupid!) Techies and geeks and nerds can play with complexity and bells and tweaks and whistles. I love FlashCatch because it does its thing simply and cleanly.

What's not to like? And it's free...if you are thinking about a .flv collection of your favorite music from YouTube, etc., what have you got to lose?

Thanks FlashCatch! My collection grew by ten files today. Jeez...I better stop to eat...

Updated on Nov 9, 2009

There is one catch others have noted...to download any file larger than 10Mb you have to update. Most of my downloads are 3-4 minute music videos. To update costs $19.95, but this gives you unlimited Mb downloads. I am going to update...it's worth it!

"Limitations!"

October 22, 2009  |  By anthonyrsc

 |  Version: FlashCatch 1.0.3

Pros

This software would be amazing if it didn't have limitations.

Cons

If the flv is larger than 10mb you have to purchase.
I hate when you only find out after downloading. I wouldn't mind if I knew before hand.

Summary

This software would be amazing if it didn't have limitations
