"Counter-intuitive in every way"

September 12, 2014

 |  Version: FirstClass Client 11.042

Pros

Sharing functions are well intended

Cons

Counter-intuitive, relative based on every email client program I've used
Inability to cut and paste email addresses is ridiculous
Clunky interface - design is embarrassing
Functions and features are hidden in menus and folders that make no sense to users of other programs

Summary

I am required by my employer to utilize an email account that is tied to the FC client. I tried for 18 months to make it work for me, but after 20+ years using various web interfaces, Mozilla, Outlook, etc. I threw in the towel. It's a backwards interface with functions that might as well be hidden since they are buried in the most unlikely of places. Multiple steps to assign people to a conference (sharing space). Out of office replies that you can't find. Inability to cut and paste email addresses. Need I go on?

Certainly, those who have only worked with FC are fans but, for anyone who has worked with another interface, the learning curve is massive. I abandoned the client and now required my team to work within the google family of products. Also a learning a curve, but one that everyone seems to manage well.

And if you can't figure it out, you can find a solution by, well, googling it. FC's supporting documentation is laughable and as counter-intuitive as the software itself.

"Cannot Paste Picture Content"

When I try to paste picture content into an email the spinning beachball appears and the program freezes. I also agree with the last two reviewers about screen draw problems and crashing on quit. A very poor upgrade, going back to older version.

"Installs fine, works fine on 10.3.4"

July 13, 2004  |  By DavidPabian

 |  Version: FirstClass Client 8.005

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've used this program for years with my now-limping-along L.A. Mac Group (hard to give up old friends). This update works fine. Settings are a breeze and file up-and-downloads are intuitive and simple.

I wrote this comment to a poster who said he couldn't find the install. It may not address his issue, but someone might find it an FYI...

I had my FC 7 inside another folder (with the network icon I use), and FC 8 installed itself seperately in the Applications folder. I moved it into the previous folder and everything works fine under 10.3.4. One thing - I moved the old 7 to the trash and double-clicking my network icon gave me an error (since it was looking for 7). I could open the icon by dragging it onto FC 8 - but it wasn't until I emptied the trash and completely dumped FC 7 that double-clicking my network icon would start up FC 8. I've had no problems with it.

"Nice Intergrated package"

 |  Version: FirstClass Client 8.005

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
We've been using FC for a number of years now. I've been beta testing this new client. It's adding tons of requested features.

I'm always surprised that this product does not get more press on the Mac Platform. It's the only solution I've found that provides mail services, conference groups, group; scheduling, and integrated address book in a cross platform environment. It even has IM and voice services, but I'm not all that familiar with them. Given Microsoft's poor support of the Mac platform, First Class is a nice option. It has servers on OSX, and Win (and soon Linux). Native clients for these platforms as well.

The server is very stable and needs much less maintenance than an exchange server.

Note: the interface definitely take some getting use to. But overall it works very well.

"FirstClass client and OpenText's support both..."

March 03, 2004  |  By rcfa

 |  Version: FirstClass Client X 7.112

Summary

...stink...
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Well, for four years Mac OS X is on the market, for four years Apple preaches to developers that their applications should not rely on being installed on a particular file system, and after four years, some developers, like OpenText with FirstClass client, still have the chutzpah to publish software that refuses to work on a case-sensitive file system.
To make matters worse, they will not even accept BUG REPORTS (not support requests) from their paying server customers, and even though I managed with much persistence to get through by all the required detours, to file the bug report, now, months later, this latest and greatest version of the software still does not fix this most trivial of bugs to fix.
FirstClass has demonstrated with their coding practices, their support policies and their lack of follow up, that they just do not care, not about the product, not about their customers and not about the Mac OS X platform.

Avoid at all cost. Unfortunately I can't, because a major software product I help testing uses FirstClass as their confidential communication platform. Needless to say, each time I want to use that POS, I have to go to another computer, need to do file transfers from my work machine to the other machine to send an attachment, and it costs me countless hours each day and makes my work considerably less efficient.

Even if something is "free", if it has that sort of lack of QA, then it's still overpriced.
