This freeware utility is a boon for users looking to manager their file menus. FileMenu Tools's simple interface logically presents all functions and menus. Most users should have no problem quickly learning to operate this application. A detailed Help file is available for those novices new to the file menu.

Operating FileMenu Tools merely means manipulating select pull-downs and function icons. Users choose a menu and use the Actions function list to add commands, submenus, or separators. Deleting and moving menu items also takes only a click. Clicking a menu item displays basic function descriptions and properties when available.

Adding commands is FileMenu Tools's power function. Advanced users familiar with element types, extensions, and variable manipulation won't have any problems correctly filling in all fields for new commands. Other users will find the Help file answers most questions. After just a few minutes, most will have a new command added to a favorite menu.

FileMenu Tools is another freeware application that proves helpful, high performance utilities can come at no cost. The application performs well, functions are logical presented and easily learned, and it improves on basic Windows operation.

"Easy to use, does not deal with all shortcuts"

July 10, 2011  |  By hkocurek

 |  Version: FileMenu Tools 5.8.1

Pros

I found it easy to use, especially helpful for the send-to menu

Cons

What I really wanted to do was get rid of the links to Windows Media Player, but that's not included.

Summary

If you're lucky and it has the options you want, it's a great program. But it doesn't deal with every line in the context menu.

"An always have program, I have run this app for years."

March 20, 2011  |  By JohnBN

 |  Version: FileMenu Tools 5.8.1

Pros

simple to use, easy to modify to suit. does all I need in a program (as far as my requirements need)

Cons

I don't have any (as stated above)

Summary

I have used this program for years. As I said above it is one of my "always have apps". Drops down in the File menu, uses no resourses, does not try to "take over" in any way.
adaptable and useful, sounds like I like it? you bet I do.

"FileMenu Tools not what it seems"

December 16, 2010  |  By Limnades

 |  Version: FileMenu Tools 5.8.1

Pros

So few I couldn't find them.

Cons

It does not what it says on the tin!

Summary

Finally, a program to help me sort out my context menu issues in Windows Vista. I got even more enthusiastic reading some of the raving reviews and I could see my fruitless searching had finally come to end. FileMenu Tools lead me to believe it would grant me control over the context menu.

Wrong!

The major issue I had was the order of some of the items on the context menu. They weren't in the order I wanted them.

FileMenu did not resolve that problem at all. All it did was give me ANOTHER item in the menu over which I had no control where it went.

Sure within the FileMenu Tools option I had (some) control, but I didn't want an extra item, I wanted to change the order of the existing menu and I still couldn't do that.

I had a look at the other features, anyway. It is fair to say there were a few options I thought that could be handy, however I soon found out not all of the options I had ticked were available in my context menu (note 1), this struck me as odd, but I could live with that, they weren't the ones I cared about.

However, this is where my second disappointment occurred. An option 'Copy Name' is for me useful, however no 'Paste Name'. So I could copy the name for a selected file, but in order to paste it I had to do it 'old style' (note 2).

Adding items to the menu is available, however not for this type of action (note 3). Meaning, doing it old style is actually quicker for me, so no benefit there either.

Which brings me to my last and final point, which to me is a vital point for any application and usually forgotten or poorly done. Unfortunately FileMenu Tools is not an exception. The online help is non existent, consisting out of a few screen shots not explaining anything.

The application help isn't much better, it seems to assume pre knowledge on how the tool works or it assumes the user knows the inner workings of their Operation System (in my case Vista), which I don't have.

Conclusion:
If you're not too bothered about having control over your context menu but want to play around a little, then maybe this is it for you. On the other hand if you, like me would like to have full control over your context menu, this tool will not give it to you.

PS.
If I am wrong in my assertions, please let me know.

PPS.
If you find a tool which actually does customize the context menu, let me (or us) know as well.

note 1:
Whether this was because of Vista or I just didn't have the applications that went with those options, I don't know. But after my initial disappointments I didn't really bother to investigate it further.

note 2:
The usual F2 and CRTL+V (with the occasional CTRL+A if I erred).

note 3:
I tried to see what the instructions were for the 'Copy Name', however those weren't shown and the options to program the new menu item didn't seem to allow me to program it to 'Paste Name' it.

"NOT a menu editor--it just adds one of its own"

June 28, 2010  |  By vestige

 |  Version: FileMenu Tools 5.8.1

Pros

It's nice-looking.

Cons

Inaccurate description. (Didn't anyone notice?)

Summary

I wanted a way to remove the numerous unwanted commands other apps had added to my context menu. The description ("Enable/disable the commands which are added by other applications to the context menu.") lead me to believe this could do that.

Wrong. It just adds a long sub-menu of its own, with various commands you can use for working with folders. Some people may find this useful, but I found it added even more clutter.

For what it actually does, this app is well-written, but its description is way off. I'm amazed CNET didn't spot that?they're usually more careful.

"A Must-Have Program"

May 17, 2010  |  By Barzillai

 |  Version: FileMenu Tools 5.8.1

Pros

Packed with tools for speeding work with files and file names

Cons

It doesn't dust my office

Summary

I use Filemenu Tools nearly every day to get (copy to clipboard) the full path of a file name and about twice a year to rename groups of files. These tools alone make this slick program essential to my work.
