"Amazing evolution this version"
Version: FileMaker Pro 10.0.1
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
the newly added script triggers of this version 10 are a new dimension to FileMaker - this update is a major step towards the right direction. You can program in all kind of programming styles - event based - procedural - functional - almost object oriented. in the right hands it is an amazing development environment and i love to run it on the mac - where i can have more then one client running accessing the same served database. not to mention it is an amazing calculator as well -
it got it almost all - it calculates better then Excel or Numbers - the speed got improved - about 40 % faster then in FMP 9. It scales up pretty nicely - still things left for improvement though: custom functions recursion limit should be adapted - we got faster hardware now to cope with and more integration of all formating parameters in custom functions - as well as status feedback of script triggers evoking scripts - for better abstraction. it is fun to rethink old filemaker habits and a lot of
clumsy or even elegant workarounds are not necessary anymore ..
again - it is only as good as its programmers - so if you find a solution with some frustration it might
not be filemaker to be blamed for. the filemaker certification program provides some measures .. -
"The mySQL fallacy"
Version: FileMaker Pro 10.0.1
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
In the documentation, it says that FM now opens mySQL and other external sources databases as if they were FileMaker database.
Don't be misled. You still can't just go in the open menu and select a mySQL database.
You'd think that after 10 versions, Filemaker would figure that people love mySQL and need to integrate with their FM solutions... Not so.
To be sure the solution involves dealing with OSX abysmal and unstable ODBC manager, or buying a third party solution from Actual technologies...
I can't wait to see that...
But all I know is that all this braging about mySQL compatibilty in Filemaker ads is just chit-chat, like that of a politician or such... It translates in "you and me speak" to "someday, maybe... if... then... else..." -
"Filemaker is a joke"
Version: FileMaker Pro 10.0.1
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Where any reputable company would release minor upgrades and bug fixes, free of charge, Filemaker releases "Major Upgrades" every few months. It is merely a way to soak consumers for more and more fees that merely fix bugs that previous versions should not have had in the first place. Someone need to file a class action against these people.
Interested in buying version 10? Don't bother. Version 11 should be out next week. -

"thanx folks"
Version: FileMaker Pro 8.0
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I bought Filemaker Pro Advanced 8.0 German (MacOS/X 10.4.2)
You can't use it!
Try to define a user defined menu set.
Your layout window will disapear - congratulations folks!
Switch to layout mode, edit a tab-control. Edit a script. Close the script editor.
Where is the layout window?
OK, we've exposé to relocate missing windows - great!
Why don't FileMaker support OS-native controls?
Why does a checkbox looks like the one from MacOS 4.3?
Why does a tab control looks like a windows one even on MacOS/X?
Why did I buy this poor upgrade?

"Too much for too little"
Version: FileMaker Pro 8.0
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
With so many things that could have been added and asked for for years in some cases this should have been 7.5 and not a full version upgrade. Too greedy for my support. I will have to wait until real improvements are made to pay for an upgrade. -
"Upgrade price is excessive"
Version: FileMaker Pro 8.0
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Considering this smells like a marketing upgrade rather than anything substancial I find the upgrade price to be very excessive. They should be embaressed to mention scrollwheel support as a bulleted "feature". Steve obviously has little to do with the management of this company. FM needs some competition!! -
"No scrollwheel support!"
Version: FileMaker Pro 7.0v2
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I just purchased this and it's great, just what I needed, except there is no scroll wheel support. This is version 7, a major upgrade, years in development, company owned by Apple, sold on ease of use and there's NO scroll wheel support? You've got to be kidding.
