"If Basic does not work, forget Deluxe ..."
Version: File Renamer Basic 6.3
Pros
The producer provides a free version (Basic).
Cons
The free version (Basic) may install and execute with a user interface. On 6 March 2011 and 12 April 2011, I contacted technical support and have yet to hear from them.
Summary
If you install the program, execute it, see the splash screen come and go, and find nothing else happens, then check task manager. I found it running; however without a user interface. I suggest killing the program, uninstall it, and until they fix this problem, forget it.
I purchased the Deluxe version and found it was the same program, i.e., the Basic verson, thus if the Basic version does not work for you, then forget purchasing the Deluxe version. -
"Works and good user interface!"
Version: File Renamer Basic 6.3
Pros
I use occasionally this program. It's very versatile and you can preview changes before applying. User interface is good as long you don't use a resolution of 800x600, but even with 800x600 you can work.
Cons
I think the free version has a limit of 1000 files, but that's enough for me. Also no drag and drop on free version only.
Summary
If you are a free amateur user this is good for you. If you are a pro you should buy the full version.

"Works great!!"
Version: File Renamer Basic 6.3
Pros
The UI let you test what the outcome would look like so that you can be sure what you'll apply is going to be what you'll get. While the UI does not support Unicode characters, but whatever the characters specified did work just fine, even Unicodes.
Cons
The UI is a bit scary to even ex-DOS/Win3.1 users (like myself). But thanks to 'Preview' button, not much of sweat pouring out from my head. It would be even great IF it could handle files under multiple folders by just one click.
Summary
Relatively easy to use once you figure it out by testing to see what it can do for you. It is very powerful. Despite the fact that the UI does not handle Unicode characters, it seems to handle many Unicode characters to rename files just fine. Test a couple of files to make sure it does work for your choice of characters (for your output files) and learn how it works would be highly recommended. Yeah, I too wish (like the other reviewer) they can spend a little more time on the UI next time to be user friendlier than current look and feel. But that is usually a much more challenge to any developers than coding. Let's see if they can rock 'n roll. Thanks for the powerful app.

"Works, but poor user interface"
Version: File Renamer Basic 6.3
Pros
It does what it is supposed to.
Cons
The User Interface is congested (buttons and stuff squished together or running off the edge of the screen). Consequently, it takes more effort to figure things out. Very little effort went into the UI, making it not as user-friendly as it could be.
Summary
Not worth buying the paid version unless they improve the UI.
