CNET Editors' review
A good file renamer can make your life easier, especially if you take a lot of snapshots or have a large and ever-changing music collection. File Renamer Basic from Sherrod Computers is a free tool that can rename, copy, and move your files and folders based on a wide range of properties and options. It can scan thumbnails, filter files by extension, and add prefixes, suffixes, and other elements, including unique parameters. You can preview changes before File Renamer makes them, and Undo them after, if you like.
File Renamer Basic opens with an optional Tool Tip. The user interface is a bit crowded, with lots of functions tucked here and there, but the Office-style Ribbon toolbar helps keep tidy. All the tools and settings you need are grouped together in the main window; for example, the settings for renaming files or folders are grouped with the Copy/Move options at the end of the file entry field (including a Copy To directory that is inactive until needed). File Renamer Basic has an Explorer-style tree view for browsing to and adding files, including subfolders. The bottom half of the interface is where you configure the program's actions. Under File Name Properties, we could edit or exclude Prefix, Filename, Separator, Unique Parameter, Suffix, and Extension. A nice touch: File Renamer Basic displays a sample file name using your selections in a large font in the bottom panel. The Delete/Insert/Remove tab includes settings for both Starting Position and Number of Characters, while the Find/Replace tab offered useful options such as case and extension settings. The Advanced tab lets users create specific file names; it includes a useful tool to search for and insert EXIF keywords. File Renamer Basic also edits ID3 tags and renames lists.
Large buttons labeled Apply, Undo, and Preview make File Renamer Basic very easy to figure out and use, though an extensive Help menu offers plenty of resources, including a full manual and a forum. File Renamer Basic worked fast and well for single files and batches. We liked being able to create and save profiles for regular jobs, too.

"Easy to use, well rounded program."
Version: File Renamer Basic 5.6.2
Pros
does what it says, easy to use, option to save profiles, great features
Cons
the interface is a little disorganized (but still understandable)
-
"Excellent Tool"
Version: File Renamer Basic 5.6.2
Pros
Nearly every conceivable renaming task is supported.
Cons
The free version lacks the support for parsing sub-folders.
Summary
An incredibly versatile tool, especially considering it is completely free (no whining pop-ups). The paid version can parse sub-folders, and undo renaming commands; but the software still stands out for what it offers for no charge.

"Awesome program, definitely download this"
Version: File Renamer Basic 5.6.2
Pros
I do a lot of filename manipulation and this program works great. I think they should remove the name "Basic" from the title of the program because there's nothing basic about this, it's rather advanced. Tons of features, nice interface.
Cons
The only shortcoming I can think of is that I don't see functionality to alter the timestamp by using a photo's exif data original time. For this I use a photo-specific program. Maybe you can do this, I just haven't seen this function.
Summary
I really like this program, it's my go-to choice when I'm altering filenames. It's a great tool to be able to sort data quickly and get things done. I use it a lot and love it. Download it, I think you'll like it too.

"Great product considering it's free!"
Version: File Renamer Basic 5.6.2
Pros
Product is much more robust than what I expected from being free. It allows for very detailed control of how you want to rename your files. Works instantly. Great feature of showing a preview of the target filename before you commit to the changes.
Cons
The interface took a little bit of learning before I can fully understand its capabilities. Having used a file renaming product on the Mac before, it allowed me to more easily learn what this can do. I wish the interface could be more user-friendly.
Summary
It's free. You can't go wrong with that. Plus, it works as expected with some robust features to boot.

"Great - really helps with iTunes"
Version: File Renamer Basic 5.6.2
Pros
I download torrents that are usally messed-up in their formatting. This tool allows me to easily change the name of songs. For example, removing artist and album from song title.
Cons
It could be a little more robust and attack more types of files.
Summary
Great tool.

"works great"
Version: File Renamer Basic 5.6.2
Pros
Powerful tool, allows you to batch rename files (just like the name says) in a variety of different ways.
Cons
People who are less "techie" might initially struggle with the interface. I didn't have any problems, it made sense right away.
Summary
I used to to help a friend who wanted to listen to audio books on her mp3 player. Some of the audio book files were not named so that her player could order them properly without manually creating playlists. This tool allowed me to simply add the 01-XX at the beginning of the filename in about 3 clicks.

"Exactly what I needed, great functions & Easy to use"
Version: File Renamer Basic 5.6.2
Pros
User interface was easy to navigate and understand. The multiple ways of renaming files using custom find and replace worked perfect. The preview feature was also wonderful and made using the program worry free.
Cons
nothing as of yet.
Summary
Simple to use, great functionality and free.

""Fear of the Unknown" is QUICKLY diminished to NADA"
Version: File Renamer Basic 5.6.2
Pros
Once you get through the VERY SMALL learning curve, this program is a BREEZE, and a HUGE TIMESAVER! All those WASTED HOURS before I found this guy! It's FANTASTIC! I have only batched image files so far. No idea how mp3's and the like are as easy...
Cons
If I could find any, I would write them down, but as yet, absolutely NOT A ONE "CON" about this program. Okay - there is ISSUE that would be a great addition. The ability to shift numerically sequenced files before the group conversion. THAT'S ALL.
Summary
I've never written a review on a product before, but I felt compelled to on this one. When I first started using it, it looked ominously difficult. But get into the HELP section, walk through your first conversion, and you'll be FLUYIN' through them in no time! I know - because I AM..... Been using it now for - oh - maybe 45 minutes... One of the easiest (and quickest operationally) programs I have EVER downloaded. KUDOS to the makers of this one!
