CNET Editors' review
This no-frills program offers some welcome twists when it comes to searching for files, and you'll be impressed with its results if not with its plain design. File Investigator's tabbed interface and simple check boxes and fields shouldn't present any problems, even for the novice user. You'll find the standard methods for searching by name, location, attributes, and date modified, but the Content tab lets you select additional parameters not found in the standard search tool. Pull-down menus offer a wide array of choices for file type, storage method, content, and accuracy, options we like. Results are displayed with filename and extension, location, and description. You can select a file to view useful Properties information, including creation and modification dates. Any user who wants more than the standard search tool offers will be impressed by File Investigator's simplicity and functionality.Publisher's Description
From RobWare:
Identifies 1,365 file types by content rather than filename extension. Extracts information/metadata out of many file types: image resolutions, document titles, etc.. Has background info on most file formats. Identifies files that Windows doesn't recognize. Can correct wrong file extensions. Uses a MS File Find user interface. Drag & Drop files onto the application or search for files by their content.
Version 2.06 adds 106 new file types and updated 70 existing file types for higher accuracy.

"Unhelpful or Nil Result"
Version: File Investigator 2.06
Pros
Fast and relatively straight-forward to use.
Cons
Results were either unknown, unhelpful or incorrect.
Summary
I am a computer programmer turned police officer. I was recently given a CD containing CCTV footage from a licencee which had an MP4 extension, but when the usual programs failed to play it I opened the files in a HEX editor and determined that the contents of the file were not of an MP4.
I tried this program which was unable to determine what the file was. So I then tried it on other (known) files and found the results to be either useless in informing me of the contents, or incorrect in the analysis.
It's a nice idea but needs a lot of work to bring it up to scratch.
