Summary
I have been using this software for over 5yrs. and when I change pc's I contacted customer support for the key to activate on new computer. They responded within 24hrs. and re activated my software. For 2 of the 5 yrs. I did not register, but the software has helped me so I paid for a registration. Get this product and register it. It's worth it and they the developers deserve it.

"Should be called Slowstone"
Version: FastStone Image Viewer 4.6
Pros
Black background, animated GIF support, lossless jpg rotation
Cons
long lag between double clicking an image and seeing it. cycles through images in its own order, no matter how your folder arranged
Summary
this is better than the stock picture viewer in windows, but I'm not too impressed overall.
If you have a folder organized, by, say modification date, and double click a file expecting to be able to page through the images in the same order, it won't work. Faststone uses some other ordering which I can't even figure out how to change.
Updated on Apr 30, 2012
If you try to select 2 images and open them at the same time to page back and forth between them for comparison, it doesn't work. Faststone again browses through all the files in the directory, in its own arbitrary order. It's super frustrating and I'm going to try something else. -
"Outstanding photo viewer"
Version: FastStone Image Viewer 4.6
Pros
Lots of features in an intuitive package. Permits simple viewing and minor adjustment of a single image, or more or an explorer style interface with more than the usual tools for making photo quality edits, crops, rotations, etc. Much more than just a viewer. I have found no evidence of malware, found the program stable and haven't noticed any ads or solicitations.
Cons
At this price point (free): none.
Summary
For my purposes, it's the best viewer I've found; I've made it my default viewer.

"A useful, functional file & photo manager w great tools"
Version: FastStone Image Viewer 4.6
Pros
Faststone is the best image manager since Compupic. It allows viewing of all image formats, including raw formats, batch renaming & conversions, thumbnail sheets, & much more. For people you want to do minor file enhancing, cropping/sizing, Faststone is great.
You see exactly what is in a folder without importing & tagging like most other photo managers do. You can easily tag with the check box.
With our photography business, I work with photos all day. I use it for batch renaming & conversions rather than Photoshop because it is so easy. This is also the program we recommend to people you want simple tools to work with their images.Cons
When dealing with large files (>30Mb), Faststone uses a lot of memory. It needs to be closed & reopened to free up RAM on computers that have too little.
Summary
I would & do recommend this program to anyone needing a image manager.

"Great photo editing program."
Version: FastStone Image Viewer 4.6
Pros
Easy to use. Lots of features. Opens RAW images. Good image straightening/cropping routines. Gamma adjustment can do a quick save on underexposed images. Easy to do a Print Screen grab, crop, resize and have something to use in a post.
Cons
Can't think of any. Obviously it's not Photoshop. But it is free vs. several hundred dollars.
(Do contribute if you use it.)Summary
I'm using FS for my routine editing - cleaning up lots of images for slide show/web use. I might dive into a deeper program when making a critical print, but FS does the normal stuff very well.
Irfanview is my choice for building quick panoramas (non-overlapping frames) and for organizing into folders. -
"The Best Out There"
Version: FastStone Image Viewer 4.6
Pros
This is the most versatile and user friendly image viewer organizational tool I have found. As a web/graphic designer I have used many. Just flat out the best for everyday tasks, batch functions, viewing properties and most of all searching for images. The lighting fast response time viewing thumbnails even off a network drive is amazing. Can't say enough good things about this program. Best part is it's very inexpensive for a commercial product. Don't get me wrong this will not replace Photoshop, etc for the heavy lifting, but everyday stuff, it's the bomb!
Cons
I would love to see tabs for folders and meta tag editing. I was told by the developer that the meta tag option is coming.
Summary
There are a couple features that could make this even better, like meta tag editing and tabbed windows. Other than that you will not find something better. There is a free version for non commercial, but has the same functionally.
