For a free program, this multipurpose image tool strikes us as a good find. Although the main interface looks too cluttered with buttons at first glance, the three main windows are intuitive enough once get your bearings. FastStone Image Viewer for Windows boasts a nice default design, but you can customize it to your liking with several skins.
Clicking a thumbnail puts a larger view of the shot in the lower-left pane, and you zoom in simply by dragging the mouse around. Though its image-editing tools can't compete with those offered by a full-featured suite, there's still enough here to make a decent amount of tweaks to your shots. You can resize, crop, remove red-eye, and adjust color, brightness, and contrast. You'll also find a few simple effects and filters, including Lens, Waves, and Morphs. Other nifty features include multiple folder slide shows, batch cropping and Windows Vista support.
FastStone Image Viewer for Windows can batch-convert files into a number of popular image formats including GIF, BMP, PSD, and PNG, and the slide-show creator allows you to apply transitions, specify the interval between images, and add your own MP3s as a soundtrack. We can recommend this program to everyone but professional designers.

Most pleasing interface among all image software.Its EXE format Image slide show maker is best among all with the great options including controlling the output file quality and size.Its clone stamp size instant varying with mouse wheel is a great.

From image viewer it can't be minimized to system tray is uncomfortable.

This is a superb application. Every time I think of something I'd like to do, I try what I think is the most likely way to do it, and it just works! Very impressive; so impressive, I've donated dosh ;-)
Cons
I use this for naming photos, both individually and in batch, and for reviewing photos. However, its searching capabilities are not as rich as Picasa, so when I'm searching for files by name, I use Picasa.

Totally ignores video files. You wouldn't even know that you shot a video because they are invisible. They should show up in the directory, then link to a video viewer program.

As a teacher of digital photography for seniors at a local college I have always suggested that they try using any of many free editing programs before buying Photoshop Elements. I now suggest that they may no longer need to go to PE, FastStone 4.6 seems to have much of what they need without all the complexity, cost and steep prolonged learning of Elementgs.

Pros
Easy to manage all your photos in the various folder where they live. You can sort, select, copy, move, rename groups of photos. You can set up slide shows and do simple editing. Downloads from cameras or card readers, sans from scanners.
Cons
Toolbars are busy with buttons. Provides quick access to features, but occupies valuable screen space. Saving changed images is cumbersome, you don't get asked until you open another photo. (could be operator error on my part)
Summary
I love the editor, its just enough for the tasks I need for photos I take. Crop, red eye, resize, rotate, mirror, colors, brightness, blur, sepia, and more. It can convert between formats (simply save as .jpg or .bmp or whatever). Even has a draw board to add text or simple lines/boxes. I use it for my main image viewer. Full screen is a quick click, and get ready fo a nice surprize, moving the mouse to the edges provides functionality. Left side - editing functions. Top folder/photo selections. Right picture information and notes.

Lightning fast (compared to other software) All the features you could want. For me the management of my images into folders straight from the SD card. The ability to move or copy, to review and crop, rename and relocate.

There may be some things it doesn't do but I've not found any.
Summary
I have used this program for many years and use it exclusively to download and manage my images. I use it to print, either as an individual or to create a PDF contact sheet of thumbnails. Using the somewhat hidden batch conversion I add borders, resize, rename and relocate many images at one time.

I've installed (and paid) for many image editing programs (Ulead, Nero and ArcSoft) over the years. My program of choice and the only one that is installed on all four computers is FastStone. -

I have been using this program for years. Very user friendly. Plenty of editing features to satisfy a casual photographer. And it's free, though donations are appreciated. Recent updates have made it better than ever.
Cons
I haven't found anything negative.
Summary
This is my favorite photo editing program and I am lost without it. It has everything I need to edit my photos. I highly recommend it.
