"very user and member friendly with the new features."

    November 4, 2009  |   By colin_r

Version: Family Tree Builder 1 build 536

    Pros

This program allows people to join in and grow their family tree which others do not allow, lots of things to do and the whole family can find relatives they may not know about.

    Cons

makes you want to use it more

    Summary

I find this program very useful, I have found relatives that I didn't know existed, I come from a large family and this program has allowed me and my family to know more about our relatives
If you have read the comments prior to 2009, It has been updated and I would use your own judgement and try it.
I would recommend to people who have used before and didn't like it to TRY it again with all the new features

    "Deceptive advertiser..Free version crippled"

    August 29, 2009  |   By ganerd

Version: Family Tree Builder 1 build 536

    Pros

    not a single thing

    Cons

I hate companies that defraud the public by advertising"FREE" only to supply an extremely limited version with notices all the way through it telling you that you have to buy in order to use.

    Summary

This should not be listed as FREEWARE, but rather ADWARE!

I hate companies that defraud the public by advertising"FREE" only to supply an extremely limited version with notices all the way through it telling you that you have to buy in order to use.

A company that will defraud the public in one way, will have no hesitations putting spy ware, or viruses in the program if you chose not to buy.

    "This software is Spyware"

    August 14, 2009  |   By capnden

Version: Family Tree Builder 1 build 536

    Pros

    Looks Great

    Cons

Hijacks your homepage in IE8 then locks you out so you can't change it. I downloaded and ran the latest version and it took me 2 hours to get rid of the mess it made.

    Summary

This software changes your home page to theirs then locks out the IE tools internet option to change the home page so you can't change it back. This is Malware that will mess up your computer.

"Easy to use & lots of features!"

    August 10, 2009  |   By julie256

Version: Family Tree Builder 1 build 536

    Pros

Instantly upgrade to version 3. Very easy to set up & get started. Multiple views for charts & option to choose any person as the root of the chart. Matching feature so you can view charts w/ matching relatives that have been posted to their website.

    Cons

Constantly asks if you'd like to publish to their website or purchase an upgrade. No fields for military service or immigration date.

"Easy to use and lots of features"

    July 5, 2009  |   By alwoodsy

Version: Family Tree Builder 1 build 536

    Pros

If you are starting out it's great. Can import GEDCOM files if you've done this stuff before. Quite intuitive. You pay when you publish lots of info on the net. For a free program, it's pretty good.

    Cons

Not too many to speak of. I'd like family members to update details on the net. Still not sure if you can do that. I'm waiting for a reply to an online query.

    Summary

Give it a try. It can import and export GEDCOM files. I did a lot in a short space of time. Attaching photos to family is very easy. I definitely recommend you try it. You have nothing to lose.

"Fun, easy, and better than the others"

    June 16, 2009  |   By arelia4482

Version: Family Tree Builder 1 build 536

    Pros

FTB has an attractive interface and it is so easy to use that you don't need to read the manual to get started.

    Cons

The MyHeritage.com site doesn't do all I would like, such as allowing members to edit their entries, or generate an HTML page that I can add to another website.

    Summary

There is nothing better for my needs among the top 5 CNET family tree downloads and FTB is a lot of fun even though it's not perfect.

    Updated on Jun 17, 2009

still loving the product but several improvements needed before I pay to upgrade vs. paying for a different product:

    - Doesn't seem like family members can join tree website and edit their own entries (or that I can export from the website to my computer file)
    - Can't select what to export to Excel (I'd like to store addresses in project file and pull them out for mailings; gives a PDF of addresses which isn't useful)
    - I'd like better queries. I want to keep track of reunion registration by creating my own Fact type and description and then querying for matching information. Can't seem to do that or anything else that would meet that need.
    - A way of importing all of the information to an MS Access database would be great. Then I could query and organize the information in all of the ways that I'd like.

    "Awesome improvements in version 3"

    March 11, 2009  |   By alphabeat

Version: Family Tree Builder 1 build 536

    Pros

Some really nice improvements in the latest versions. You can finally merge in data from any of the other family trees (their database is more than 300 mio people). But the automatic tagging via face recognition on photo albums is nice and free.

    Cons

Well, you'll have to pay for the merging of Smart Matching results. And there are some smaller bugs.
But even without the additional features it might be worth a try.

    "Easy to use for beginners"

    March 2, 2009  |   By Ynot60

Version: Family Tree Builder 1 build 536

    Pros

I liked how easy it is to use. It doesn't take hours to work things out. I like the connection to Google Maps for places.

    Cons

I don't know if this is common problem but It often stopped working while in use & the Task Manager was the only way to shut it down, losing all unsaved recently entered data.

    Summary

    Updated on Mar 2, 2009

Some of the features that were free are no longer in the latest version. Smart Match merging & Smart Research are now only available in the paid version

    "Pretty but Sneaky"

    February 16, 2009  |   By linknlist

Version: Family Tree Builder 1 build 536

    Pros

Very nice graphic interface with useful functionality. Also very clever business model: download software, register with site to use software, upload data for storing a/o sharing, and upgrade to premium when limit is reached (not free).

    Cons

What appears friendly actually hijacks your homepage and locks it to myheritage/google (=hits+ppc) with the excuse that you are networking. This bothered me enough to remove FTB, which wasn't as easy as it should've been. You must manually uninstall.

    Summary

Originally, I had hoped to find a stand-alone program for my own personal desktop use. Family Tree Builder appealed to me as a way to record my family roots. Once I realized it was rolled into a web app, I thought maybe this would be an added bonus, but I was wrong. As intuitive and pretty as the gui is, the cons far outweigh the pros for me. I prefer the freedom to set my own browser start page, save files where I choose to save them, and uninstall programs I don't want. Family Tree Builder is sneaky and borders on being malicious. How rude!
