A favorite of RadioShacks nationwide, now this household name offers its very own app. Sadly, FREE Calls with magicJack on your smartphone doesn't work nearly as well as replacing your home phone. Call quality is spotty and some calls aren't delivered at all. It could save you if you're really short on minutes, but it's not terribly reliable.

The app gives you a nice, big keypad to dial on, which makes sense considering the service is especially popular with an older crowd. You can also choose to pull numbers from your phone's contact list. If you don't have an account, the app will assign you random numbers every time you call. Being able to use your existing number or choose a random local number would be much more helpful. If you have a paid account, you can choose from a list of numbers. During our testing, magicJack sometimes took a full minute or more to actually send the call and other times the call did not even ring on the other line. Leaving a voicemail still worked fine, though.

For users who don't mind dealing with the inconsistencies of this app or already use the service, it's a nice way to earn free calls. If you're pushing close to your monthly minutes limit but have Wi-Fi or data to burn, magicJack is an okay app to use. Most similar VoIP apps charge for calls, so if you can make this app work, it's worth the effort.

"Constant beeping on line. Terrible customer service."

September 07, 2013  |  By eitohe

 |  Version: FREE Calls with magicJack 2.6.661.3

Pros

they are cheap

Cons

i have been on a chat with their customer service to resolve a beeping sound that the other person hears. they say it sounds like i'm pushing buttons but i'm not. I don't hear it. mj only has 'chat' for customer service so you can't get a live person to talk to - and they have put me on hold while they 'resolve' things many times. after several hours of 'chatting' (i'm not sure what they are doing, while i wait) my problem persists. no one has solved it. they say they will pass me to someone who can, and then i am on hold again only to eventually be disconnected from the chat. very frustrating.

April 07, 2013  |  By Phonecall7

 |  Version: FREE Calls with magicJack 2.6.661.3

Pros

Stole money from the account and stop giving me technical support in the middle of conversation?

Cons

Background noise is huge, I change a 4 phones and still the same. All phones are tested on another line and working perfect. I tray to do all troubleshooting over the phone and they dont be able to do something, still noise.!!!!

And at the same time I tried to talk to tech support, they did not answer my questions, but I was stopped at the end of time without any notice to the end, Francis stop conversation in the middle of conversation. Very not professional and poor support. My advice take a Skype. Also they start having a problem with background noise, tray to resolve this 3 times failed all 3 times ( I changed a 4 phone set, all phone sets I test on another regular phone line and working grate, with magicjack not working) . Newer resolve any ticket for me, always asking to tell them all information from the beginning. Copy of the conversation (part of that) can be seen below:

"Incompatible with Samsung Gravity Smart (SGH-T589)"

February 21, 2013  |  By QualityReviewer

 |  Version: FREE Calls with magicJack 2.6.661.3

Pros

Was informed that my device did not support it right up front; avoided taking up space with a download

Cons

Could not find it on Google Play; had to get Magicjack Tech support to give me the web link w/o all the hash characters. Ended up not being supported on my stupid smart phone, even though it's a full-on Androide device. Pretty disappointing.

Summary

Oh well, I'll try Talkatone

"Have a regular Magic Jack for 3 years on my computer."

December 21, 2012  |  By themitchellman

 |  Version: FREE Calls with magicJack 2.6.661.3

Pros

I upgraded to the "Plus" version recently and use Bell's Fibe 25. This allows you to connect to a wall outlet and modem/router using an Ethernet connection. Thus giving you a choice to plug into your computers USB or modem. The sound is very good on incoming and outgoing calls. Very few dropped calls with the Ethernet connection using Bell Fibe 25. The faster your mbps speed the better the call quality. I'm using a Canadian number and there are many numbers and area codes to choose from. Customer service online is good with free parts if requyired. I'm using a Panasonic wireless 4 package phone system and find the quality is better than Motorola or Vtech phones. All the cords needed to hook up to the computer, modem/router and USB are included in the package. You can make calls to the US and Canada using the internet with no extra charges. You get voice mail, 411, 911, redial, contacts, and choice of dialing by phone or using the computer.

Cons

Everything that is manmade has issues or problems. I guess the advertising "Your choice: Use with or without computer" is misleading. It sounds like you can plug the Magic Jack into a wall outlet and plug in a phone to the Magic Jack and it will work. This is not the case. You still require an internet connection! As a Canadian user you also have to pay an extra $10.00 a year for a Canadian number.

Summary

Overall I paid $39.99 (half price) for the unit. I signed up for 5 years $99.00 and chose a Canadian number for $20.00 plus $10.00 a year to maintain the number. That adds up to $168.99 plus $40.00 for the remaining 5 years. Oh yeah, right now you get a bonus year for signing up on a reoccurring credit card. My current Bell phone bill is $43.40 a month incl. tax ($520.80 yearly or $3124.80 6 years). This is without long distance fees or rate increases. So you be the judge!

"works only some of the time"

November 28, 2012  |  By robynsc

 |  Version: FREE Calls with magicJack 2.6.661.3

Pros

when it works, it works and it's free.

Cons

won't connect to wifi consistently, which is the only mode i use. has trouble connecting to public wifi networks. no refresh mode to reconnect to networks. grrrrrr...

Summary

if you can get it for free, it's not a bad idea to have it as an app, but i wouldn't depend on it in an emergency...or any time, actually.

"HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE"

November 21, 2012  |  By dhaxton

 |  Version: FREE Calls with magicJack 2.6.661.3

Pros

"Free"; except "real" 10 digit phone number is $20/yr.

Cons

HORRIBLE connections; extremely choppy; essentially unusable

Summary

I understand this is the beta version; but... being a SW developer myself, I would NEVER allow my code to go into the filed in the state I've experienced with this app!

I have a very reliable 4G connection to a tower 1/2 mile from my home which provides 10mbps down and 1mbps up on my clear.com router and my EVO 4G phone. Both brands are reputable and work fine with everything else. But not with MagicJack! Unusably choppy connections everywhere!!!

I hope MagicJack reads this, fixes it and release a ready for prime time version soon; 'cause this one AIN'T!

"It works... no frills"

October 10, 2012  |  By TikkyTekki

 |  Version: FREE Calls with magicJack 2.6.661.3

Pros

Simple setup, dial tone within a few minutes of opening the package, voice quality is better than my cell in my house, portability, lowest priced out of all the others

Cons

Not much... we'll check back in durability maybe after another several months.

Summary

I didnt know what to expect with this at first, seemed too good to be true... after making my first several calls, I am pleasantly surprised at the functionality, call quality, and basic usability of the device just like a real landline phone, which is what I wanted for a fraction of the cost. It has some features I dont even need, but its nice to know its not some cheapo device that can only do one thing.

"Tried it, seems good"

September 30, 2012  |  By xsvenom

 |  Version: FREE Calls with magicJack 2.6.661.3

Pros

I installed the app from the google play store on my Droid Charge. I followed the simple directions and joined for free. I am now able to make phone calls with my WiFi or 4G no problem. The app on the phone does run in the background all the time, unless I close it with Task manager. It will give you an option to pick a dialer when you make a call. Your original phone dialer or the magicjack. It really is simple to use and can always be uninstalled.

Cons

You get some crazy magicjack number. You still get to keep your number you are paying for from your provider. Now you have a second number that is a magicjack number.

Summary

If you have a tablet I would suggest you install this app on your tablet, it will turn it into a phone. You never know when you are going to use it incase of an emergency as well.

I look at this app as if was a backup plan. Or if I have to call some companies on peek time, I will use magicjack and not eat my Verizon minutes up on my phones plan.
